Summary StatementA class incumbent operates and maintains multiple fuel fired boilers and auxiliary equipment to ensure a continuous supply of steam and or hot water to secure facilities.
Nature and ScopeA class incumbent reports to a technical superior and is responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of multi-fuel fired boilers and related auxiliary equipment to provide continuous supply of steam and/or hot water for the secure facility. An incumbent makes rounds of heating system to check gauges and inspect pumps and ensure proper operation. Incumbents continually monitor and regulate temperatures and steam flow to maintain adequate operating pressures. An incumbent is responsible for cleaning, inspecting and replacing check-values, back flow preventors, air traps, and in-line oil strainers. An incumbent supervises inmate work crews assigned to the powerhouse to include maintaining security of all tools, supplies and equipment. Class incumbent makes periodic counts of inmates to assure their location and custody and are responsible for the enforcement of all rules, regulations and procedures affecting discipline, security and safety. In addition, incumbents are responsible for training unskilled and skilled inmate workers. Incumbents are also responsible for testing of water for such factors as PH, dissolved solids, lime, anti-foaming, calcium, polymers etc., and treating with chemical additives based on test results. Incumbents also operate and maintain emergency electrical generators and may operate and repair various vehicles and equipment engines. Work includes maintaining logs by recording such information as time, preventative maintenance actions, fuel oil tank, readings, chemical utilization and chemical testing. An incumbent may also be responsible for ordering fuels, materials and parts. Work involves regular exposure to hazardous conditions and occasionally requires physical effort in order to restrain and subdue inmates.
