Summary Statement

This class is responsible for operating a large scale teleprocessing computer including the full range of tasks associated with computer operation.

Nature and Scope

Supervision is provided by a technical superior. Duties include operating a large scale teleprocessing computer and peripheral equipment and diagnosing, correcting or assisting in the correction of system malfunctions. Principal contacts are with tape library personnel in order to acquire proper input tapes, production control personnel to ensure accurate print-outs, programmers to resolve software problems and with users who need assistance in accessing the system.

  • Operates a large scale teleprocessing computer and peripheral equipment; prepares equipment for operation and program processing.
     
  • Diagnoses system malfunctions, rectifying operator error, correcting or assisting in the correction of software problems with the aid of a programmer or notifying the vendor in the event of hardware failure; seeks guidance from superior as needed.
     
  • Takes corrective action in emergency situations such as power failures, power surges, fire, etc. to protect or recover data critical to State operations.
     
  • Controls job flow according to priorities and ensures that jobs which interfere with each other are not run concurrently.
     
  • Assists users in accessing the system.
     
  • Monitors computer environmental controls and the security of the premises, taking appropriate action when required.
     
  • Writes logs and reports on work processed.
     
  • May assist in training lower level operators.

  • Knowledge of job control languages.
  • Skill in the operation of large scale computers and peripheral equipments.
  • Ability to take appropriate action in the event of emergencies.
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports and logs.
  • Ability to control job flow according to priorities and avoid the concurrent running of jobs which interfere with each other.
  • Ability to ensure the security of the premises.
  • Ability to comprehend technical manuals, operating standards and documented procedures.
  • Ability to follow complex written and oral instructions.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Computer Operator III
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in operating a mainframe computer and peripheral equipment.
  2. Six months experience in rectifying computer and network malfunctions.
  3. Six months experience in teleprocessing components such as front-end processor, terminal clusters or line connecting.
  4. Knowledge of job control language.
