INTRODUCTION

The City of Ventura is seeking creative, energetic individuals interested in temporary or seasonal part-time employment supporting recreation, nature and history outdoor education, sports, cultural or senior programs offered through the Community Services Department.

THE POSITION

Depending on your level of experience and the operational needs of each program, openings may be filled at any of the following levels:

Recreation Leader I/II:  Provides task-oriented supports to programs providing on-site oversight of participants, activities and classes.  Schedules program facility and equipment, receives and accounts for cash management, maintains attendance and activity records, assesses and maintains security of facility and seeks assistance as needed.
Recreation Specialist:  Plans, organizes and coordinates a community program in a specialized area requiring advanced knowledge, skills or ability related to that area; trains support staff and may work on projects within a given field. May provide transportation for participants, driving a city vehicle.

SPORTS LEAGUE PROGRAMS / YOUTH & ADULT (year round)

($8.23 - $15.00 per hour)

Depending on assignment, may provide site supervision or act as an attendant monitoring and overseeing a variety of youth and adult sporting events, including basketball, softball, volleyball, soccer and flag football.  Duties may include scorekeeping, scheduling umpires/referees, communicating with staff and participants, selling merchandise in snack bar, cash management (making deposits) and completing related reports.    Must have some experience in team sports or outdoor recreation.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS (school year) &
SCHOOL BREAK CAMP PROGRAMS (summer & school breaks)

($8.23 -$15.00 per hour)

Depending on assignment, plans and develops programs or provides staff support to the following youth programs:

PEAK After School Program (weekday afternoons): Coordinates after-school enrichment activities at school sites providing homework assistance and organizing day-to-day activities including sports, games and special programs.  May develop curriculum and provide instruction related to sports, theatre drama, music or dance. 

Westpark Community Center: Coordinates after school enrichment activities at Westpark Community Center.  Activities include homework assistance, computers, art, music, gym activities and special programs.  Westpark also provides youth sports leagues for soccer, basketball, and flag football.

School Break Camp Program:  Coordinates and organizes school break activities at camp program sites and outdoor facilities throughout the city, and leads planned activities, sports, games and special programs.  May develop curriculum and instruct programs related to sports, theatre drama, music or dance or nature studies.    

NATURE & HISTORY OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAMS

($10.00-$15.00 per hour)

Depending on assignment conducts programs in the following areas: 

Nature & History Outdoor Education Programs-school group field trips (weekday mornings during the school year): Conducts “hands-on” education programs for elementary school-age children (preschool through 6th grade), working as an outdoor educator (Interpretive Specialist) with the city’s Interpretive Outreach Program focusing on California history or nature studies in an outdoor setting at local park and historic sites. Training is provided to present topics in one or more of 29 program areas. Visit www.cityofventura.net/interpretive for more information on this program. 

Nature & History Outdoor Education Programs – for residents & visitors (year-round occasional weekday afternoons or weekends): Conducts outdoor nature or history activities or walks geared for families, adults, seniors and/or children of all ages. May occasionally assist with program development.

CULTURAL ART & SPECIAL EVENT PROGRAMS (year round)

($8.23 - $15.00 per hour)

Depending on area of assignment, provides general office program support including computer/data entry and customer assistance at City Hall or Barranca Vista Center, or supports the following programs:

City Hall Public Art: Acts as Docent scheduling, coordinating and conducting tours of City Hall Public Art and trains volunteer tour guides.

Special Events: Provides assistance including location set-up and breakdown of city-sponsored events including Music Under the Stars (at Olivas Adobe), Cowboys, Heroes and Outlaws, Festival in the Park, Artwalks, and Street Fairs. Requires availability on weekends.

SENIOR SERVICE PROGRAMS (year round)

($8.23 - $15.00 per hour)

Depending on assignment, coordinates or provides staff support to a variety of senior service programs offered through the Ventura Avenue Adult Center or the Ventura Senior Recreation Center, as follows:

Reception or Facility Operations: Provides front office assistance, greeting and assisting the public, answering the telephone, taking computer registrations and accounting for payments, or assists with facility room set-up and building maintenance including general clean up in and around building, and acts as building attendant during rentals.
Senior Nutrition Program: Coordinates and oversees all aspects of program including daily management of in-kitchen meals, food preparation, and meal site volunteers and maintain related computer records, or assists with meal service through food preparation, serving and cleaning workstation. 
Home Delivery Meal Program: Coordinates home meal delivery program responding to inquiries and referrals, completes eligibility assessments, conducts/schedules home visits or phone consultations, manages confidential client caseload and computer records, and acts as liaison with Food Share Agency.
Travel Program: Assists in tour planning, coordination, billing, reporting, marketing and computer record maintenance, coordinating tour escorts, vendors and bus charters. 
Tour Bus Driver: Provides tour transportation, assists travelers and completes travel documentation. Requires valid California DMV Class B Driver’s license with passenger endorsement, current medical certificate and complete DOT training. General knowledge of wheelchairs and mechanical lifts is desirable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Recreation Leader I/II:  A combination of education, training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities is required. 

Recreation Specialist:  A combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and sufficient work experience in the specialty area to acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform independently without close supervision are required.

License: 

  • Possession of a California Class C driver's license may be required.
  • If the position requires driving a mini-bus or van, a Class B license, with passenger endorsement and the allowable auto transmission and air brake restrictions, must be obtained within six months of employment.
  • If the position requires driving a mini-bus or van, drug-testing is required, according to the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Working Conditions:  Environment:  depending on program assignment: works in indoor office conditions and outside, in seasonal climate and weather conditions;  may drive a vehicle to different locations; may work with noise of traffic, large groups and crowds at special events.  Physical Abilities:  depending on program assignment:  hearing and speaking sufficient to exchange information in person, on the telephone, or at formal presentations; vision within normal range with or without correction; sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods of time; kneeling and crouching; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds;  pushing and pulling weights in excess of 100 pounds when duties include transporting passengers needing assistance, mental capability to observe and interpret people and situations and work on multiple concurrent tasks. Hazards:  depending on program assignment: exposure to noise, traffic, large crowds, dirt, dust, weeds, and computer screens.

BENEFITS

Employment Information:  Right to Work:  Before employment, candidates must submit documentation verifying their legal right to work in the United States.  Background Check:  A pre-employment verification of background may be conducted.  Probationary Period:  This is an ‘At-Will’ position, subject to termination at any time, without notice or right of appeal. 

Temporary Appointment Status:  Extra Help:  May work up to 999 hours per fiscal year.  Limited Term:  May work over 999 hours per fiscal year up to 18 months.  Extended Term:  May work over 999 hours per fiscal year 18 months – 3 year maximum.

Direct Deposit:  Paychecks are automatically deposited into employee bank accounts.

Wellness Program:  A comprehensive program is available, including on-site gym, classes, downtown/beach walking routes, weight loss, and tips on nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

Retirement:  In lieu of Social Security, Temporary, Extra-help employees, not currently CalPERS members, are enrolled in the City’s Part-time, Temporary, and Seasonal Employee 457 Deferred Compensation retirement plan.  If you are a CalPERS member, please notify Human Resources at the time you are hired and your retirement contributions will be handled in accordance with the City’s CalPERS contract.  If you are a CalPERS retiree, please contact CalPERS to discuss the impact that your employment in this position would have on your pension benefit.  Receiving a CalPERS benefit may affect your Social Security upon retirement.  For further information, contact a Social Security office or go to www.socialsecurity.gov/form1945.

Limited Term or Extended Term employees will be enrolled in CalPERS.  The City contracts for the 2% at 55, Single Highest Year formula.

Other Benefits:  Temporary employees are not eligible for vacation, holidays, sick leave or any other benefits provided to regular employees.
