INTRODUCTION

The City of Ventura is continually accepting applications for Instructors to assist in our Recreation, Cultural and Senior programs.  If you have in-depth knowledge of a specific area that you can share with others, this may be the opportunity for you.  Apply today for further consideration!

THE POSITION

Under supervision, creates and teaches youth and adult recreational sports, cultural, performing arts, crafts, historical and outdoor interpretive, travel programs, and therapeutic specialty classes. This is a temporary, extra-help classification and paid on a "per participant" basis.

  • Be organized and able to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Speak Spanish, for those classes where this would be beneficial to the participants.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Plans and organizes classes for youth and adults in a variety of topics.  Develops and prepares lesson plans and materials appropriate to the student and material being taught.  Secures equipment and supplies as appropriate.  Conducts classes in a safe and secure manner. 

Maintains records and prepares reports.  Communicates with class students and City staff.  Maintains good relations with people encountered in the course of work. 

Ensures that facility and equipment are in safe condition and reports problems encountered.

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

Knowledge of:  specific subject area to be taught; class organization and the formulation of lesson plans; leadership techniques and methods; principles and techniques of good public relations;

Ability to:  design and prepare lesson plans; execute classes with minimal supervision; demonstrate patience when working with students; exercise independent judgment and resolve problems; prepare written records; maintain cooperative working relationships; read, speak and write English fluently, clearly and distinctly; and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.    

LICENSE/CERTIFICATES

Licenses:

  • Depending on assignment, possession of a California Class C driver's license may be required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to two years of college, some related experience in teaching and developing lesson plans for the specific class and age group, and competency in the class subject matter are required.   The ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable.

Temporary Appointment Status:  Extra Help: May work up to 999 hours per fiscal year. Limited Term: May work over 999 hours per fiscal year up to 18 months. Extended Term: May work over 999 hours per fiscal year 18 months - 3 year maximum. 

Direct Deposit: Paychecks are automatically deposited to employee accounts.  

Wellness Program:  A comprehensive program is available, including on-site gym, classes, downtown/beach walking routes,weight loss, and tips on nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

Retirement:  In lieu of Social Security, Temporary, Extra-Help employees, not currently CalPERS members, are enrolled in the City's Part-time, Temporary, and Seasonal Employee 457 Deferred Compensation retirement plan.  If you are a CalPERS member, please notify Human Resources at the time you are hired and your retirement contributions will be handled in accordance with the City's CalPERS contract.  If you are a CalPERS retiree, please contact PERS to discuss the impact that employment in this position would have on your pension benefit.  Receiving a CalPERS benefit may affect your Social Security upon retirement.  For further information, contact a Social Security office or go to www.socialsecurity.gov/form1945

Limited Term or Extended Term employees will be enrolled in CalPERS.  The City contracts for the 2% at 55, Single Highest Year formula.

Other Benefits: Temporary employees are not eligible for vacation, holidays, sick leave or any other benefits provided to regular employees.
