Introduction

This is responsible recreation work.  Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing activities of average difficulty at an assigned fitness and wellness center. Generally, the employee in this class of work performs assigned tasks independently. Under general supervision, the employee performs tasks which include teaching, overseeing, planning, and promoting a variety of fitness and wellness activities. The employee is required to exercise some initiative and independent judgement in the tasks listed above for all ages. Work at night and on weekends might be required. Work is reviewed through periodic observation by area supervisor while in progress and through reports submitted.

Examples of Duties

Plans, promotes, and conducts fitness and wellness activities; schedules center activities; works with volunteers to implement program-related special events; counsels participants and resolves conflicts when necessary; oversees and teaches persons of all ages.

Instructs, oversees, and reinforces proper strength training procedures and exercise techniques with participants; conducts training sessions in strength and various group fitness activities with recreation support staff; maintains updated information and participates in workshops on group fitness activities, and strength training safety and effectiveness.

Maintains order and discipline at assigned facility; administers first aid; promotes safety; maintains fitness equipment; inspects fitness and wellness facility equipment to insure safety; maintains a neat, clean, and pleasant environment; maintains inventory of supplies; submits requisitions for needed repairs and supplies.

Maintains accurate records of attendance, property damage, special activities, and accidents; attends and conducts sessions at meetings, workshops and training clinics; coordinates programs and activities with co-workers and supervisor; assists in evaluation of lower level employees; promotes good public relations with community.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: strength training principles and practices; the techniques and effective teaching skills of various group fitness activities; nutritional concepts.

Some knowledge of: first aid techniques; fitness evaluation techniques; record keeping and report writing techniques.

Ability to: provide leadership in coordinating and conducting fitness and wellness activities; provide instruction to participants engaged in group fitness and strength training activities; counsel and advise participants; stimulate public participation and support for fitness and wellness activities; maintain records and compile reports; maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.

Skill in: administering first aid and CPR; care and maintenance of fitness equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school and completion of one (1) year of college with one (1) year experience in fitness/wellness, nutrition, recreation, physical education, leisure services or other closely related fields; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of: a valid Florida driver's license; Standard First Aid and CPR Certificates within six (6) months of appointment; a nationally recognized certification, within one (1) year of appointment, in one of the following: personal training, nutrition, and/or group fitness.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
