Introduction

This is community relations work in developing and promoting programs to prevent crime and increase public safety.  Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for planning, developing, and coordinating educational and cooperative programs to prevent crime and increase public safety in selected high crime residential neighborhoods. Work is of more than average difficulty, requiring the employee to exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in the research, development, and implementation of these programs. The employee is required to work effectively with citizens residing in the selected areas, police officers assigned to these areas, and the local community and civic organizations involved. Under general supervision, the employee promotes community responsibility, awareness, and cooperation among these groups. Work is reviewed through reports submitted, observations, conferences, and results obtained in reduction of crime and increased public safety.

Examples of Duties

Develops, implements, and coordinates educational and cooperative programs for citizens living in high crime residential areas; works with citizens living in high crime residential areas; works with citizens residing in selected areas and police officers who patrol these areas in order to gain an insight into crime and public safety problems; coordinates with local community and neighborhood civic organizations to promote a feeling of community responsibility, awareness, and cooperation; solicits suggestions from a variety of sources as to methods of alleviating crime and increasing public safety.

Advises the municipal police department, local community, civic organizations, and other citizens groups as to methods of improving neighborhood crime prevention and increasing public safety.

Conducts research into crime prevention and public safety programs currently in operation in other cities to determine their adaptability to selected neighborhoods; analyzes crime and related data concerning public safety hazards in selected high crime neighborhoods; works with officials in other communities in order to share information.

Compiles statistics, reference data, and other related records; correlates data and records to substantiate progress and prepares reports as required.

Performs related work as required. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: research methods, principles, and practices related to crime prevention; municipal police organization, administration, and activities; modern community development, human relations, and crime prevention programs.

Some knowledge of: statistics.

Ability to: follow oral and written instructions and arrive at sound decisions independently in accordance with established rules and regulations; communicate with varied groups of citizens and civic organizations and speak effectively in public; accomplish independent research and study for completion of projects; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials and the public; maintain records and prepare and submit clear, concise, and accurate reports both orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in criminology, police science, criminal justice administration, or a closely related field and six (6) months experience in law enforcement; or, a bachelor’s degree in business or public administration or the social sciences and one (1) year experience in law enforcement; or, an associate’s degree and three (3) years experience in law enforcement or with a municipal crime prevention program; or, an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
