JOB SUMMARY

This is skilled maintenance and equipment operation work primarily involved in street sweeping operations in the Public Works, Signs and Sweeping section. The work involves operation of a street sweeper on assigned routes in the City; performing skilled operation of street sweeper, cleaning streets on a designated route or as needed for construction or spill clean up’s from motor vehicle incidents where traffic obstructions are a hazard; operating 5 and 10 yard dump trucks with various mechanical attachments such as snow plows, sand spreaders, deicing applications; and other various equipment such as front end loaders, backhoes, or street flushers; preparing daily reports; cleaning and maintaining equipment daily and other related work as assigned. Occasional Overtime, Weekends and Emergency response will be required. Position is currently on graveyard shift, working 4-10's, but could rotate to day-shift at a later date.

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED

May use a variety of tools and equipment such as, but not limited to dump trucks with a variety of attachments, loaders, trenchers, large tractors and mowers,  flail mowers, bobcats, diagnostic tools, propane fired liquid asphalt kettles, crack sealing kettles, asphalt pavers, and front end loaders, and street flushers.  Regularly uses a variety of hand or power tools related to facility or utility maintenance such as screwdriver, pliers, hand and power saw, claw hammer, pry bars, scrapers, brooms, mop, leaf rakes, drills, loppers hand pruners, pole saws, sander, deicer applicator, pesticides and fertilizers, mowers, backpack blower, pressure cleaner, small service truck, hand truck, vacuum, compressor, edger, fan, power broom,  and ATV workhorse.

May also be required to use cleaning chemicals, pesticides or herbicides with appropriate protective clothing or gear.

PPE include aprons, barricades, ear protection, face shield, gloves, protective eye wear and/or goggles, safety cones, face masks, rubber boots, and safety vest

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Considerable experience utilizing regenerative air street sweeping machines including experience in the operation of a variety of construction equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides knowledge of the appropriate materials, procedures, tools, equipment operation related to street cleaning work. Candidates must possess a valid Oregon Class “A” Commercial driver’s license.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is generally performed in a field setting in all types of weather and field conditions from urban high traffic areas to open fields, often involving work at heights or subterranean locations. The nature of the work often requires the availability to respond during off-duty hours, in the evenings, or on weekends. Work frequently involves moving from one physical location to another and performing physical tasks requiring bending; stooping; moving equipment and tools; and agility sufficient to perform maintenance, repair, or construction tasks under varying weather conditions and in confined spaces. Work involves exposure with safety precautions to sewage, dust, dirt, solvents, cleaners, lubricants, and other chemicals related to work assignment area. Work may require some use of modern office equipment such as a personal computer.

SELECTION PLAN

The interview will evaluate the following job-related knowledge and abilities: Knowledge of the appropriate materials, procedures, tools, equipment operation related to street cleaning work; knowledge of the geography and physical layout of the City of Salem; traffic laws of the State of Oregon; and occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in equipment operation,  street sweeping and traffic control. Candidates must possess skill in the operation of moderately complex construction and transportation equipment; ability to service various types of equipment; and the ability to work a graveyard shift with little or no direct supervision while maintaining high productivity.
