JOB SUMMARY

The City of Salem is hiring Recreation Leaders (Levels I through IV) to support the Cityís recreation programs.† The jobs require assisting the Softball Program Coordinator and the Softball Program Specialist in the day to day operations of Wallace Marine Park Softball Complex, local high school softball fields, and associated programs.† Much of the work at levels I and II is entry level manual, custodial and clerical tasks that are needed to support the softball and recreation programs.† Candidates at Level III are expected to provide leadwork and direction to less senior staff; Level IV assists with supervision of seasonal recreational staff and assigns tasks, evaluates performance, and provides training and guidance.† Specific job duties and requirements are listed for each level below.

Recreation Leader I:

Job Description:† Work requires ability to perform specific tasks which are readily learned after appointment.† In some cases, specific skills are necessary before appointment for specialized assignments. Work involves considerable direct contact with the public. Work is usually performed in accordance with specific instructions and is reviewed for compliance with instructions.

Set up, take down of facility equipment such as chairs, tables, game equipment, in accordance with specified schedule at various recreation facilities. Examines equipment for safe operation.† Posts schedules and information updates on bulletin boards. Maintains clean orderly facilities.† Performing duties such as, cleaning surfaces, picking up and taking out trash, washing garbage cans, and putting up and taking down temporary fences.†† Performs facility maintenance including debris pick up, cleans surfaces, restrooms or facilities as required by circumstances. Reports accidents and injuries to immediate supervisor. Prepares verbal and written reports regarding damaged or lost equipment.

Assists recreation leaders in directing specialized activities, laying out supplies and materials, assisting with group activities, cleaning up recreation area after an event or evening leauge.†

Requirements:† A combination of education or experience which provides an equivalent combination within the area of assignment of the following knowledge, skills and abilities related to softball:

Knowledge of games and sports.† Knowledge of recreation equipment and materials.

Recreation Leader II:

Job Description:† In addition to the job duties listed above Recreation Leaders II may provide on site implementation and organization of recreation activities, and may collect participant or registration fees.† May contribute to overall recreational activity planning through participation in staff meetings.† May manage and secure recreational facilities where assigned.† May perform light maintenance duties such as cleaning surfaces, picking up trash, supply inventory and organization, and removing recreation hazards at the facility where assigned.

Requirements:† Requires a minimum of one year of college in recreation, education, or related field, or any equivalent combination of experience and training working with youth and adults in a recreational setting.†

Experience with youth and adult softball programs is desired.†

Skill in the use of personal computers is desirable.† Ability to write basic information such as nightly logs and reports or accident reports.† Considerable ability to follow oral and written instructions.† Considerable ability to work effectively with recreation staff and the general public.† Ability to learn recreation procedures.†

Recreation Leader III:

Job Description: In addition to the job duties listed above, organizing work and staff; using tools and supplies, manual and power-operated hand tools, power equipment, and assisting with softball field maintenance.†† Assisting with the coordination of the delivery of softball programs and services and help providing oversight and direction with ongoing softball field and facility maintenance, help manage youth and adult softball tournaments and local league play; helping recruit, developing and managing a diverse group of volunteers to support City of Salemís youth and adult softball programs; record keeping, checking rosters, administer fees, data input, and reporting scores and highlights to local media outlets.

Requirements:† Requires a minimum of two years of college in recreation, education, or related field, or any equivalent combination of experience and training working with youth and adults in a recreational setting.†

Experience in leadership or ďperson in chargeĒ† role is desired.

Experience with youth and adult softball programs is desired.†

Must be able to communicate effectively with the general public, co-workers, supervisors, softball players, local businesses, and game officials; enforce Department of Public Works/Parks and Transportation Divisionsí policies and procedures; understand and follow oral and written instructions; and work independently or with teams.†

Must be able to maintain effective relationships with local service providers, businesses, civic organizations, and the general public; and local, State, regional, and national softball organizations.†

Must be able to manage potentially hostile and confrontational situations; and complete responsibilities with constant interruptions.†

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age.†

Recreation Leader IV:

Job Description:† At this level, candidates are responsible for advanced leadership of recreational activities or programs.† Successful candidates will provide work direction to lower level Recreational leaders by providing training, relaying expectations, providing work assignments, reviewing work ensuring accuracy and completion.† Candidates will be expected to perform any of the duties listed for lower level Recreational Leader positions in addition to providing leadership or supervision to other staff.†

Requirements:† Minimum of three years of college or equivalent experience or specific training related to softball, sports facilities, or recreation programs.† Requires the ability to plan and implement specialized recreation programs.† Also requires the ability to work cooperatively with others in a leadership role.† Requires the ability to follow directions from supervisory staff, but be self motivated and directed in order to complete recreation programs and assignments with own initiative.††

Must be able to manage potentially hostile and confrontational situations; and complete responsibilities with constant interruptions. Desired certifications include: Certified Parks and Recreation Professional, and CPR/AED Certification.†

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age.†

For all levels:

Work is performed at an outdoor recreation facility. Involves a variety of work hours, exposure to dirt, noise, moisture, and chemicals with safety precautions. Ability to work long and flexible hours in all kinds of weather. Work involves working with a variety of people, interruptions, and changing work duties and utilizing a variety of office equipment such as telephones, calculators, or computers, etc.

Must be able to communicate effectively with the general public, co-workers, supervisors, softball players, local businesses, and game officials; enforce Department of Public Works/Parks and Transportation Divisionsí policies and procedures; understand and follow oral and written instructions; and work independently or with teams.†

Must be able to maintain effective relationships with local service providers, businesses, civic organizations, and the general public; and local, State, regional, and national softball organization

Possession of a valid Class C Driverís License is required.† Some positions may require a valid ATV license.†

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Tasks involve general recreation activity leadership in the Cultural, Senior, Neighborhood, Aquatic, Outdoor and Sports areas.

May perform some light maintenance duties as related to activity area including cleaning surfaces, picking up trash, storing supplies, removing recreation hazards.

Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Some positions may require possession of a current Lifeguarding and/or Swimming Instructor's certification.

Some positions may require possession of a current Red cross First Aid certificate and/or CPR certificate.

Some positions may require possession of a valid Oregon driver's license or Class C license and the ability to meet the City's driving standards.
