The City of Salem is recruiting for part-time career (.50 FTE) Library Assistant III staff to work in Circulation Services division of Salem Public Library. The primary assignments for this position includes working on the public service desks providing excellent customer service; helping patrons with account issues and registrations; give directions to Library Asst. 1 & 2 staff, work-study students and volunteers; some reference and reader’s advisory service; divisional projects and other duties, as required.
Library Assistant III work includes lead responsibilities. Lead responsibilities include: serving as lead staff at the main library and branch library; organizing, giving directions, and participating in the work of the unit; reporting major problems to supervisors; and evaluating collection and use patterns. The degree of independence of action varies with the specific assignment, but duties are frequently performed without direct instruction or supervision. Employees of this class frequently direct the work of other employees such as Library Asst. II, Library Asst I, Library Aides, and Library volunteers.
Experience in progressively customer service work as a Lead Worker; graduation from a four (4) year college or university; or any equivalent combination of experience and training providing the requisite knowledge and skill set for this position. Such skills include: ability to motivate and help direct staff; excellent customer service capabilities; demonstrable knowledge of library services, policies and procedures; experience with networked computing resources (both hardware and software- experience with 2007 MS Office programs) and related equipment; an ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other library personnel and the public; an ability to work independently with a high level of productivity.

The application review and the interview will evaluate the following knowledge and abilities: Knowledge of the principles and practices of library science; library procedures and techniques; ability to operate library equipment, including the computer system; apply library science principles and techniques to specific operating problems; plan and direct the operation of a small library unit; direct and train clerical library employees and volunteers; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other library personnel and the public; PC keyboarding, word processing, and other software programs; preparing display or graphics work. Must be able to work weekends as assigned. Ability to work for prolonged periods while standing and walking, lift up to 25lbs, push carts up to 75 lbs, and place library materials on both overhead and floor-level shelves. Some positions may require possession of a valid Oregon driver's license and the ability to meet the City's driving standards.
