JOB SUMMARY

City of Salem is looking for a Maintenance Operator I to work in the Signs & Sweeping section. This is manual work in maintenance, repair, and construction in the Public Works Department. As a member of a crew or individually, the work will involve installation and maintenance ofstreet signs and posts; lane striping, curb painting, pavement legends, and setting up traffic control. Depending on the season, the position will be responsible for the button operation in the paint striper; assisting in striping lay out on newly paved roadways; installation and replacement of street markings and legends, reflective raised pavement markers, painted yellow curbs, and parking stall lines; installation and maintenance of traffic signs and posts; graffiti removal; maintenance of various city assets such as fences, hand and guard rails, street furniture, etc; working as back up street sweeper operator as needed; setting up traffic control for planned special events and emergency road closures for Salem Police and Fire; and responding to illegal dumping and removal of dead animals in the right-of-way and City owned property. The work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions and involves working in the right-of-way in high urban traffic areas. Work involves the use of tools such as post hole diggers, digging bar, propane torch, hand and power tools and other related work as required.

Work frequently involves the operation of trucks and other standard and special construction and maintenance equipment. Work may be performed with independence after the routine is learned and some incumbents are responsible for the completion of jobs without specific instruction or guidance. More complex operations are usually performed under direct supervision as a member of a crew. Employees of this classification are responsible for using all safety precautions, performing work to standards, ensuring work location is left clean and safe and proper documentation is completed. Work is subject to review by an operational supervisor for compliance with standing procedures, specifications, and work orders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in general maintenance, repair, and construction with experience in street right-of- way facilities, utility systems and public improvements is desirable, particularly within area of assignment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge and abilities.A valid Oregon Class A Driver license and the ability to meet City driving standards.

SELECTION PLAN

The interview will evaluate the following job-related knowledge and abilities: Knowledge of the appropriate materials, methods, procedures, tools, and equipment involved in the maintenance and installation of traffic control devices; solid knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and State revisions; traffic laws andoccupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in maintenancework in the public right-of-way; ability to perform a variety of assigned semi-skilled to skilled duties and change from one project to another without loss of efficiency or quality;read maps, interpret plans and specifications, and keep records of time and materials used;perform a variety of manual tasks with some independence after initial instruction;understand and follow oral and written instructions.
