ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER POSITION
:
Under direction from staff, greet clients at Animal Services and direct them to the person or location in the facility that will meet their needs.  Requires knowledge of the ASD operation, good customer service skills, and a helpful, courteous personality.  Although this position does not involve much direct interaction with animals, it is a key component to the successful adoption of our animals to good homes. 

TYPICAL TASKS
: (Not in order of importance)

  • Greets customers, answers questions about Animal Services, and directs customers to the best person or location in the facility for service.

  • Controls public access at entry door.

  • Enhances facility safety by assigning customers with small children to staff or volunteer escort.

  • Cooperates with ASD staff, volunteers, fosters, rescue organizations, and honor farm trustees to carry out ASD mission of protecting the public and animals of SLO County

  • Participates in volunteer development activities, and other duties as required.

 THE REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of:  

  • The concept and practice of customer service in a public sector setting.

  • Knowledge of the Animal Services shelter operations is ideal, but applicants can acquire knowledge through ASD volunteer orientation and training meetings upon appointment to the position.

Ability to: 

  • Present a positive, courteous, helpful attitude at all times to all ASD customers, staff and volunteers

  • Communicate effectively verbally.

  • Relate a customer’s stated needs to the proper service person or location in ASD.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with county employees, volunteers, fosters, animal rescue groups, and clientele.

  • This position also requires an ability to conceptualize what is happening in the shelter at any one time based on the customers inside, cooperatively prioritize customer service requests, and courteously assert higher priority service needs to staff or volunteer co-workers

  • Remain on one’s feet for much or all of a minimum pre-scheduled 2-hour shift. 

  • Communicate effectively with people of diverse socio-economic backgrounds, age, and gender.

  • Operate efficiently in a dynamic environment.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
: Must pass a general background check, be over 18 years of age, and have enthusiasm for the ASD mission of protecting the public and the animals of SLO County .  Acceptance of the position will require attendance at a 3 hour orientation session prior to beginning work.

SELECTION PROCESS
: The process will include an evaluation of application information presented or rating as determined by an interview process.

SPECIAL NOTE:  We are seeking several volunteers for this position.  Volunteers will be required to commit to a schedule, so that ASD can optimize client service goals throughout our open business hours.
