ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER POSITION: Under direction from, and in close coordination with staff, assists ASD Shelter Cleaning Team by moving animals from kennels to facilitate the cleaning process. Additionally, may assist cleaning team by putting food, water, and clean bedding into just-cleaned kennels/ cages. Although this position does involve a great deal of direct interaction with animals, it is entirely in the context of maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of the cleaning team. This position is a key component to optimizing the living conditions of our animals and to enhancing the facility’s appeal to potential adopters. Team players are a must for this position.
TYPICAL TASKS: (Not in order of importance)
- Move dogs from kennels to yards and back in concert with cleaning team’s progress through facility.
- Coordinate with other volunteers who may be taking animals out for purposes other than facilitation of cleaning, to assure minimal impedance of cleaning team.
- Working directly with cleaning team, will place food, water, and bedding in cages as they are cleaned.
- Cooperates with ASD staff, volunteers, fosters, rescue organizations, and honor farm trustees to carry out ASD mission of protecting the public and animals of SLO County
- Participates in volunteer development activities, and other duties as required.
THE REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of:
- Animal Handling techniques, with emphasis on leashing and walking dogs in a dynamic environment.
Ability to:
- Present a positive, courteous, helpful attitude at all times to all ASD customers, staff and volunteers
- Work cooperatively in a highly structured, team task
- Reliably arrive at ASD shelter at a scheduled time between 7 AM and 9 AM, and remain for minimum 2-hour shift as assigned.
- Place leashes on dogs effectively, and lead them safely through an environment that is highly stimulating to the animals.
- Lift up to 50 lbs, use/manipulate small tools (can opener, etc).
- Remain actively on one’s feet, often bending or reaching, for much or all of a minimum pre-scheduled 2- hour shift.
- Work safely, efficiently, and compassionately with animals in a dynamic environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must pass a general background check, be over 18 years of age, and have enthusiasm for the ASD mission of protecting the public and the animals of SLO County. Acceptance of the position will require attendance at a 3 hour orientation session prior to beginning work.
SELECTION PROCESS: The process will include an evaluation of application information presented or rating as determined by an interview process.
SPECIAL NOTE: We are seeking several volunteers for this position. Volunteers will be required to commit to a schedule, so that ASD can reliably complete shelter cleaning before opening to the public.
