ABOUT THE POSITION:
Under
general supervision, provides a wide variety of direct patient care by
performing the more responsible, non-registered nursing duties under the
direction of a Registered Nurse; and does other related work as required.
TYPICAL TASKS:
Performs assigned responsible patient care, utilizing specialized knowledge
in the techniques, methods, procedures, and equipment required in support of
the professional staff; observes, records and reports unusual conditions or
behaviors; takes and records blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and
respiration; administers medications as prescribed by physicians; may adjust or
discontinue flow of intravenous therapy; performs various types of
catheterizations and irrigations; provides for the safety, emotional and
physical comfort of the patient.
THE REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of: General
nursing procedures and techniques involved in the care of patients, disease
processes and possible results, medical terminology, hospital routine, and
equipment.
Ability to: Learn and
operate a wide variety of hospital equipment; properly administer enemas,
douches, irrigations, and catheterizations; give medications prescribed by
physicians; recognize critical and significant changes in patients; keep
records and prepare reports; establish and maintain effective working
relationships with the staff, patients and patients' families.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES:
Possession of a valid license as a Vocational Nurse issued by the
State of California
is required at the time of application and must be maintained throughout
employment.
Certain positions within this classification may require driving. When driving
is an essential function of the position, a valid CALIFORNIA driver's license will be required
at the time of appointment.

AGENCY SHOP:
Employees hired into classes represented by SLOCEA labor contracts are covered
by Agency Shop provisions which require that new employees become SLOCEA dues
paying members or pay an agency shop service fee in lieu of dues.
NOTIFICATION:

SELECTION PROCESS:
Non-Competitive Exam. Candidates who meet license or certification
requirements will be referred to the department for hiring interviews. Eligible
lists may be used to fill regular, limited term or temporary positions. New employees are required to complete an INS
