Conditional employment offers are based on successful
completion of any preappointment background investigation, drug testing, and
medical/psychological evaluation.
ABOUT THE POSITION: Lifeguards assigned to this position will be
working as a lifeguard at either a pool, beach, or lake. Daily responsibilities include: supervision of visitor use at a County aquatic
facility or designated swim area, including pools and decks of swimming areas
and other aquatic areas; enforcement of County policies and regulations;
preventative life guarding; preventing accidents; effecting rescues; providing
basic first aid to the public; collecting user fees; distribution of information
such as schedules and activities; monitoring of pool chemistry, aquatic site
maintenance; helping prepare bulletin boards, awards and certificates; and
other related duties as assigned. In
addition, swim instructors will need to conduct swim lessons, aqua aerobics,
and other similar activities and related duties such as promotion, scheduling,
and development of aquatic related activities. In addition, for Lifeguard II: Act as Head Lifeguard
at a specific aquatic facility. This
position requires daily management of facility and personnel; assistance with
continued training, testing, and scheduling of personnel and aquatic programs
such as swim lessons, aqua aerobics, and pool parties; assists in the operation
of a swimming pool and may be required to manage an aquatic area on occasion;
conducts swimming and lifesaving classes; organizes and coaches water sports;
and other related duties as assigned.
THE REQUIREMENTS: American Red
Cross Life Guarding Certificate at time of appointment; CPR for the Professional
Rescuer (including infant, child, adult and two-man or bag valve mask (BVM))
and Title 22 Certification must be completed prior to active duty. EMT Certification can be substituted for the
CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Title 22 requirements. Social Security Card required at time of
appointment. In addition, for Lifeguard II: One
year of experience as a Lifeguard I or equivalent is preferred.
All Lifeguard personnel must pass both a written and physical performance
test. Beach and lake lifeguards have
additional testing.
In
addition: Swim Instructors
are required to be American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certified
and be able to show proof at time of appointment.
Note: Employees in these classifications are required to work irregular
hours, holidays and weekends. New
employees are required to complete INS Employment Eligibility Verification
forms to certify citizenship or legal residency and authorization to work.
These are temporary appointments without benefits or tenure. Must also pass
County pre-employment medical exam. All
prospective employees must submit to and pass screening under Public Resources
Code Section 5164 in regards to criminal offenses.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES: Certain
positions within this classification may require driving. When driving is an
essential function of the position, a valid CALIFORNIA driver's license will be required
at the time of appointment.
NOTIFICATION: Applicants will be notified 6-8 weeks after the final filing
deadline. However, some recruitments may take less or more time depending on
the type of exam and number of applicants. Primary notification for each phase

SELECTION PROCESS: The examination process will
include a competitive examination consisting of an evaluation of job-related
education and experience through one of the following methods of testing:
A) competitive application rating, based solely on application information
presented OR B) oral board rating as determined by an interview panel. In
either case, the evaluation will be weighted 100% in determining a candidate’s
placement on the eligible list. The hiring department will be provided a list
of the top nine ranks of eligible candidates and one additional rank for each
vacancy. The hiring department may hire any of the candidates certified to the
department. Veterans and disabled veterans preference points will be
assigned when applicable. Please note: any part of this selection process may
be waived or changed as deemed appropriate by the Human Resources Department at
any point during the recruitment. Eligible lists may be used to fill regular,
limited term or temporary positions. New employees are required to complete an
INS Employment Eligibility Verification form to certify citizenship or legal
residency and authorization to work. Essential functions of a job for purposes
