Radiologic Technologist III-Mammography - Per Diem

Introduction

This examination is being given to fill one (1) Per Diem vacancy in the Radiology Department of San Joaquin General Hospital and to establish an referral pool to fill future Per Diem vacancies. TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Performs screening, diagnostic, and interventional mammographic procedures as indicated; tracks and reports pathology results related to mammography procedures; tracks abnormal mammography results, performs medical audits, and oversees the reporting of normal/abnormal exam results to clinicians and patients.
  •  Performs numerous quality control duties as required by law; performs exam audits and maintains exam statistics and continuing education records for the radiologists.
  •  Assists Radiologist in fluoroscopic x-ray examinations; assembles equipment; measures and mixes barium and contrast media; maintains surveillance over patients, prepares and positions patients for diagnostic x-ray films; determines the correct exposure factors on the basis of height, weight, portion of body involved and degree of penetration required; selects appropriate cones and screens to reduce secondary radiation and fogging; sets machine control and exposes the required number and type of film.
  • May receive on-the-job training preparing and positioning patients for sonographic imaging examinations; calibrates and adjusts equipment according to the area of body involved; takes appropriate films of each examination.
  • Records patient information, patient identification numbers, and number and type of views taken in-patient log; maintains records as required.
  • Demonstrates all procedures to students; monitors students; performance of procedures; corrects faulty techniques and explains appropriate methods.
  • Develops exposed film using automatic processors.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Note:  Supplemental application must be submitted with employment application.

    Experience: Two years of experience performing radiographic work which included at least one year of experience performing mammography tests and procedures. Must have experience and demonstrate competency in radiography, fluoroscopy and mammography.

    Substitution: Graduation from the San Joaquin General Hospital School of Radiologic Technology may be substituted for six months of the required general experience.

    Licenses and Certificates: Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and certification by the Department of Health, State of California, as a Radiologic Technologist. Possession of a State of California fluoroscopy permit may be required as a condition of assignment or continued assignment as a Radiologic Technologist. Possession of a State of California Certification in mammography is required

    Note: Generally, persons who are registered by; the American Registry or Radiologic Technologists may obtain certification as a Radiologic Technologist in the State of California upon application and payment of fees the State Department of Health.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Methods and techniques of diagnostic radiography; various anatomical positions used in mammography and general radiography; and care and use of radiographic equipment; safety practices to prevent overexposure to radiation.

    ABILITY

    Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time, manual dexterity sufficient to administer procedures and operate equipment; bend, stoop and lift patients; position patients for a variety of imaging examinations; understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions in exact detail; demonstrate the operation of x-ray equipment in practical work situations; perform minor interventional x-ray procedures; make independent decisions and judgments in carrying out work assignments; maintain records; establish and maintain effective relationships with medical staff, patients and patients families.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Mobility-Frequent operation of a keyboard, standing for long periods of time, walking, pushing/pulling, and operation of heavy equipment; occasional sitting for long periods of time and stair climbing; Frequency of Lifting-Constant lifting of 5 lbs. or less; frequent restraining, lifting/turning heavy objects or people; occasional lifting of 5 to above 70 lbs.; Visual Requirements-Constant need for overall vision, hand/eye coordination and reading/close up work; frequent need for color perception, depth perception and field of vision; Dexterity-Constant holding, reaching and grasping; frequent writing; Hearing/Talking-Constant hearing of normal speech and talking in person; frequent hearing on the telephone/radio and talking on the radio; occasional hearing of faint sounds; Emotional/Psychological Factors-Constant public contact, decision making, concentration and working alone; frequent exposure to hazardous materials, trauma, grief and death; occasional weekend/night work and overtime/travel; Environmental Conditions-Occasional exposure to hazardous materials.

    Selection Procedures

    Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination.  If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

    Physical Exam:  Some classifications require physical examinations.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination.  The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

    Pre-employment Drug Screening Exam:  Some classifications require a new employee successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the drug screen.  The County pays for the initial drug screen.

    Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

    • They are related to the Appointing Authority, or

    • The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

    Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.
