Introduction

The Public Works Field Engineering Division is recruiting students who are currently enrolled in an Engineering program to participate in an intern program. There are currently two internship opportunities.  This temporary assignment will run from May through the end of December.  The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM.  Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of an application. TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Performs rod and chain functions on survey crews; cuts and clears brush and uses manual and electronic equipment to locate survey monuments; drives stakes and pins; may keep and check survey party field notes; may use theadolite, electronic distance measuring equipment and level.
  • Assists in preparing drawings from field notes; performs routine drafting work; draws, plots, traces and colors maps and other drawings using drafting machine and other tools and equipment; operates reproduction machine; assists in reducing field notes; assists in checking center lines and cross sections; uses calculator to make routine engineering and survey computation; tabulates field data; assists in maintaining records and preparing reports; and may use basic computers.
  • Assists in the checking of private land surveys; may draw topographic and other maps; may check and revise existing maps showing boundaries and districts; may search titles and documents; may assist in the preparation of legal deeds and property descriptions.
  • May assist in the issuance of permits; gives information in person and by telephone regarding permit applications and ordinance requirements.
  • Takes soil, aggregate, and concrete test samples for laboratory analysis; assists in conducting routine soil and materials tests.
  • Assists in road, bridge and other construction inspection; may check grading for proper slopes; checks quantities of materials delivered to the construction site; participates in maintaining records of labor and equipment used on construction projects; assists in preparing reports of project progress.
  • Sets traffic counters and conducts manual traffic counts; compiles traffic data; repairs and maintains equipment used in traffic engineering division; assists in drafting and drawing maps; prepares charts, graphs, and diagrams related to engineering studies.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Note:  Supplemental application must be submitted with employment application.

     

    License:  Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

     

    Special Requirement:  Must be a local resident currently enrolled in an engineering program or a student currently enrolled in an Engineering program at a local university.

    KNOWLEDGE

    The principles of geometry, algebra, trigonometry end elementary drafting.

    ABILITY

    Use a measuring tape and rod as instructed; make simple drawings and copy or trace from completed survey drawings; file plans and other materials by predetermined classifications; prepare and compile data, maps and charts for traffic or other special studies; maintain records; learn and use computer applications as required; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

    Selection Procedures

    Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination.  If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

    Physical Exam:  Some classifications require physical examinations.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination.  The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

    Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

    • They are related to the Appointing Authority, or

    • The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

    Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.

    Proof of Eligibility:  If you are offered a job, you will be required to provide proof of U.S. citizenship or other documents that establish your eligibility to be employed in the U.S.
