Licensed Vocational Nurse-Per Diem Correctional Health

Introduction

This recruitment is being conducted to fill several Per Diem positions in Correctional Health Services and to establish a pool of candidates to fill future vacancies.

Employees assigned to Correctional Health Facility shall receive a 5% supplement.

Per Diem employees will receive additional 15% of base salary in lieu of benefits.

Department: Correctional Health Care is located within the San Joaquin County Jail, which was built in 1992. The County Jail is considered one of the more modern jail facilities in the state. Correctional Health Care is responsible for providing medical, dental, and mental health care to the incarcerated adult and juvenile population.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Takes and records vital signs; performs routine nursing duties including making beds, lifting and moving patients; bathing and feeding patients, personal and oral hygiene of patients and expiration care.
  • Administers various types of medications, including I.V.'s; applies dressings, compresses and soaks.
  • Inserts urinary catheters; tests urine and records results.
  • Observes patients; reports and records observations accurately; transcribes doctor's orders.
  • Participates and assists in the care, treatment and rehabilitation of the emotionally disturbed, mentally ill, or mentally retarded.
  • Participates in orientation and on-the-job training of assigned personnel; participates in staff development training programs.
  • May perform specialized medical treatment or tests and operate related medical equipment and apparatus upon assignment.
  • May administer CPR, use resuscitation equipment and administer first aid.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Prior to and as a prerequisite for employment, a background investigation will be conducted by the Sheriff’s Department which will result in the grant or denial of a security clearance. If granted, the failure to maintain a security clearance will result in termination from County employment.

    License: Possession of a valid license as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California, Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners; or possession of a valid Interim Permit issued by the Board.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Principles and practices of vocational nursing; human anatomy insofar as it applies to the treatment and therapy typical of assignment; the more common physical illnesses and their symptoms; medical terminology.

    ABILITY

    Follow oral and written directions of a technical and professional nature in exact detail; develop skill in the care and operation of medical equipment and apparatus used in area of assignment; plan and coordinate the work of subordinates if required by nature of assignments; maintain and interpret nursing records and reports; deal with patients sympathetically and tactfully; attend to the personal needs of the physically and mentally ill.

    Note: Appointees with Interim Permits will be designated as Vocational Nurse Interim Permitees.

    Part-Time Employee Benefits: Part-time employees who meet the appropriate eligibility criteria may receive health insurance benefits and step increases.

    Selection Procedures

    Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination.  If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

    Physical Exam:  Some classifications require physical examinations.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination.  The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

    Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

    • They are related to the Appointing Authority, or

    • The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

    Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.
