INTRODUCTION

This recruitment is being given to fill two part-time vacancies in San Joaquin General Hospital's Sterile Processing Department and to establish an eligible list to fill future vacancies. San Joaquin General Hospital is a 24/7 running facility. Qualified applicants should be able to work rotating shifts which may include nights, weekends and holidays.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Receives and sorts surgical equipment being returned for decontamination and reprocessing; removes gross soil; manually cleans, disinfects, and/or decontaminates items; loads, unloads and monitors the operations of automatic washers and other equipment; tests equipment for proper functioning before releasing it for use.
  • Inspects and processes trays and other equipment from decontamination area; operates and monitors steam and gas sterilizers; checks daily biological results; assembles and wraps trays and other items for sterilization; monitors expired sterilization dates and rotates stock to minimize re-sterilization.
  • Cleans and disinfects all surgical case carts; cleans and disinfects patient care equipment and orthopedic traction equipment; maintains clean and sanitary work areas.
  • Prepares and restocks surgical case carts using physician preference cards; restocks processed storage area; prepares, double checks and stages case carts for surgery.
  • Fills requests for and issues medical supplies and patient care equipment; distributes supplies and equipment to units in a timely manner.
  • Develops, organize and maintain computerized inventory system, including product research, requisitions, storage, quality assurance, billing and inventory control.
  • Serves as a liaison with other health care providers and support agencies to obtain, borrow or loan out highly specialized equipment; arranges for transportation and/or setup of such equipment; maintains resources list for special equipment needs.
  • Participates in the development of procedures, forms and work methods; assists in developing and conducting employee training programs
  • Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings as required; may serve as a lead worker depending on shift assignment.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Note: Supplemental application must be submitted with employment application.

    Experience:  One year experience equivalent to a Sterile Processing Technician I in San Joaquin County service.
    Education:  Successful completion of a training program as a medical instrument technician or sterile processing technician through a training program approved by San Joaquin General Hospital.

    Substitution:  Possession of a current certification in sterile processing techniques issued by the National Institute for the Certification of Healthcare Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel (NICHSPDP) OR the California Central Service Association (CCSA) will substitute for the required education.
      

    KNOWLEDGE

    Basic medical terminology; sterilization methods, supply distribution, storage and inventory control; basic filing and recordkeeping systems; sterilization, equipment and parts common to acute care hospitals; basic computer and computer software relevant to department operations; safety rules and regulations in the operations of equipment.

    ABILITY

    Clean, sterilize, assemble and store medical supplies and equipment according to established standards and procedures; train others in sterile processing standards and procedures; utilize standard office procedures and equipment; operate computers and related software; read and use manufacturer’s catalogs and parts lists; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers, vendors and agencies; communicate effectively with coworkers and the public.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Mobility-Operating a data entry device; frequent standing and walking for prolonged periods of time; occasional bending, stooping, and reaching overhead; Lifting-Lifting of 30 pounds or less; push case carts weighing up to 100 pounds; Vision-Constant use of overall visual capabilities; frequent need for color perception, hand/eye coordination, reading and/or close up work; Dexterity-Frequent holding, grasping, repetitive motion and writing; Hearing/Talking-Constant hearing and talking of normal speech in person and on the telephone; Emotional/Psychological-Frequent public contact; occasional exposure to emergency situations, trauma, grief or death; occasional working alone; Special Requirements-May require working weekends/nights/overtime; Environmental Conditions-Frequent exposure to noise; occasional risk of exposure to hazardous materials, dirt dust, smoke, fumes, poor ventilation and indoor cold/heat.

    SELECTION PROCEDURES

    Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination.  If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

    Physical Exam:  Some classifications require physical examinations.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination.  The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

    Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

    • They are related to the Appointing Authority, or

    • The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

    Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.
