DEFINITION

This is a temporary class in the Employment and Economic Development Department (EEDD). Under immediate supervision, incumbents learn to perform a variety of clerical and program support tasks following standardized procedures for the Summer Youth Employment and Training Program; and do related or other work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

An employee in this class assists with EEDD program intake and referral activities by performing basic clerical and other support tasks such as preparing and distributing application packets for the summer youth work experience program. This class differs from Summer Youth Intake Assistant II in that incumbents of the latter class utilize previous program experience and act as lead workers by checking and reviewing the finished work of Summer Youth Program Assistant I's.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Assists with the preparation of application packets and the distribution of such packets at schools and other youth-based community groups; assists in the student registration process by monitoring sign-in sheets and assisting with crowd control procedures; distributes schedules and other papers to applicants.
  • Learns to review application packets and required documents for completeness and preliminary eligibility; learns to screen clients for potential program eligibility.
  • Helps secure necessary documents from applicants to facilitate the completion of eligibility determination; collects and duplicates verified documents during certification interviews or arranges follow-up appointments; may monitor forms supply and other certification documents.
  • May work with other intake staff to coordinate scheduling of off-site certifications or special group certifications.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    License:  Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Basic punctuation, spelling, grammar and alphabet; basic arithmetic; basic principles and practices of public relations.

    ABILITY

    Be accurate; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups of individuals; learn office procedures.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Mobility-Sitting for extended periods; frequent movement; frequent driving; lifting -frequently 5 pounds or less; Vision-Corrected vision; frequent reading and close-up work; normal hand-eye coordination; Dexterity-Normal dexterity with frequent writing and repetitive motion and ability to operate a computer keyboard; Hearing/Talking-Frequent hearing and talking on the telephone and in person; Emotional/Psychological-Occasional exposure to grief; frequent public contact and decision making; frequent concentration required; Special Conditions-May require occasional overtime, weekend or evening work.
