Head Lifeguard (#TC9263)



DEFINITION

Under direction, this temporary/part-time position assists in managing the aquatic program swimming pool operations and performs lifeguard duties and swim instruction; and does related or other work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Head Lifeguard is the supervisory-level class in the Lifeguard series. This class reports directly to the Pool Manager. The incumbent supervises staff and is responsible for assisting in the on-site management of pool operations, performing lifeguard instructor and swim instructor duties, and maintaining pool facilities in accordance with state and county health department guidelines.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Instructs, assigns, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates lifeguards, swim instructors and pool attendants; plans and provides for the preseason and in-service training of lifeguard staff.
  • Observes patrons on the deck and in the water to ensure safety and prevent accidents; provides first aid, CPR and/or pool rescue skills as needed.
  • Provides swimming instruction to the public by demonstrating and effectively teaching the required skills; monitors and communicates progress of students; maintains and distributes forms, certifications and other records.
  • Assists in operating and maintaining swimming pools and facilities in accordance with county and state health department guidelines pertaining to pool operation, water chemistry and safety equipment; assists in supervising the general care and cleaning of the facility and the maintenance and minor repair of equipment; properly opens and/or closes facility as assigned.
  • Inspects the facility daily and reports any unsafe conditions and equipment to the pool manager immediately; maintains records, reports and information regarding hourly patron attendance; water chemistry, daily weather conditions and incidents.
  • Answers patron questions and concerns and provides information as needed; reports and treats all patron and pool problems; enforces the facility policies, rules and regulations; communicates to the pool manager and performs additional duties as assigned by the pool manager.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience Two full seasons of experience (equivalent to at least 6 months of experience) as a lifeguard and swimming instructor at a swimming pool which provided an organized aquatic instruction program.

     

    Special RequirementMust be 17 years of age at the time of appointment.

     

    Must be able to obtain following certificates at the time of appointment.

     

    Certificates:   A COPY OF THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE REQUIRED CERTIFICATES MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION:

     

    Possession of current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Card or equivalent,

    Possession of current American Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety, and

    Possession of current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

     

    Fingerprint CheckCalifornia state law requires all public recreation program employees to submit to fingerprinting for the purpose of obtaining a summary of criminal convictions. 

    KNOWLEDGE

    Lifeguarding, rescue, surveillance and first aid techniques; the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program; state and county health department standards pertaining to pool operation; basic public relations and communication techniques.

    ABILITY

    Effectively lead, evaluate and supervise the work of staff; recognize and respond effectively to emergencies; administer and teach swimming classes; communicate effectively with diverse groups of patrons, including children; keep records and write reports; coordinate staffing schedules; provide information to the public about pool and facility regulations, policies and procedures; perform pool and facility maintenance; administer first aid and CPR as needed.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Mobility-Sit or stand for long periods of time; push and pull; bend and squat; lift and carry up to 70 pounds; swim; Visual-Overall vision sufficient to read close-up; color perception; eye-hand coordination; Dexterity-Reaching; grasping; repetitive motion; writing; Hearing/Talking-Hear and speak on the telephone; hear faint sounds; Emotional/Psychological Factors-Public contact; decision making; Environmental Conditions-Noise; fumes; wet surface walking; indoor and outdoor temperature conditions.
