DEFINITION

Under immediate supervision, assists in the performance of semi-skilled building maintenance and repair work; and does related or other work as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a temporary position developed to assist Crafts Workers in the performance of their duties. The Crafts Worker Assistant assists in a variety of semi-skilled tasks related to building construction, installation, alteration, maintenance and repair and assists other workers in performing more skilled work. Work is generally done under close supervision; however, as experience and skills are gained employees work more independently.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Assists in performing semi-skilled painting, glazing, carpentry, plastering, locksmithing, masonry, plumbing, metal work, welding, electrical, mechanical, heating and ventilating, and related maintenance trades work.
  • Assists in hanging doors, pouring concrete, laying flooring, installing partitions and drop ceilings, repairing door closers, furniture and roofs, and in performing other general carpentry work.
  • Assists in general minor plumbing repair; repairs leaking faucets, unstops clogged lines; assists in installation of water and sewer lines.
  • May installs and replaces light fixtures, outlets, bulbs, and fuses.
  • Learns to maintain and perform minor repairs on locks, appliances, automotive equipment, boilers, heating and ventilating, and related mechanical devices.
  • Assists skilled workers in a variety of skilled building trades tasks.
  • Maintains runways and taxiways; sprays chemicals for weed control.
  • Operates a variety of motorized tools, equipment and vehicles, and performs minor maintenance of same; uses hand tools common to the building maintenance trades.
  • May perform other janitorial, grounds maintenance or related work as assigned.
  • May learns to read, interpret, and work from sketches, diagrams or simple blueprints; may forecast material needs and order supplies; maintains simple records; may prepare routine reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

License: Possession of valid California driver’s license may be required by the nature of the assignment
 
Certificate: Completion of Construction Technology Program

KNOWLEDGE

The basic methods, practices, tools and materials used in the several building maintenance trades; the occupational hazards and safety precautions.

ABILITY

Learn to perform semi-skilled work in a variety of building trades; understand and follow oral and written instructions; write simple notations and prepare simple reports; do heavy manual labor; maintain effective working relationships.
