DEFINITION

Under immediate supervision, learns public health educational programs, services and materials, assists in basic functions and performs related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry, trainee level in the Public Health Education series. Incumbents in this class learn the various programs, operating procedures and materials of the field of public health education, assisting and under the direction of Public Health educators and other professional agency staff. Initial assignments are training in nature and as experience is gained, there is limited increase in scope and responsibility level of duties.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Learns procedures for determining community health education needs; learns and assists in the planning, developing and implementing of public health educational and informational programs and services.
  • Learns to organize and implement meetings, workshops, seminars and conferences and participates on a limited basis; learns to prepare a variety of public informational display material such as posters, exhibits and graphics.
  • Assists in researching data and preparing written educational and informational media.
  • Learns the structure and functioning of community agencies and organizations and their public health educational needs; assists public agencies in developing public health related educational programs and projects.

  • Assists in providing in-service training to agency staff and community organizations; prepares and gives talks to groups.
  • Assists in the preparation and maintenance of technical records and reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Possession of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in public health, public health education, or social or behavioral science.

License:  Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic community health problems and programs and services available for treatment and prevention; basic community organization and resources; basic psychology and human behavior; principles and methods of data gathering, organizing and presentation; basic research and statistical methods; language mechanics; basic principles of public relations.

ABILITY

Learn to plan, prepare and implement public health educational programs and services; learn to develop public health educational and informational materials; effectively express self orally including making public group presentations; express self effectively in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of community agencies, groups, and general public.
