DEFINITION

Under general supervision, stores evidence in connection with law enforcement investigations and prosecutions; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

An employee in this class is responsible for properly storing evidence and for maintaining chain of custody and other records.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Receives, tags, stores, and logs evidence, found property or property maintained for safekeeping in the Property Room; maintains chain of custody records for length of time property is in Property Room.
  • Assists in preparing evidence for court; may testify in court.
  • In accordance with Federal, State, and Department regulation and/or policy destroys or disposes of evidence and property including firearms, drugs and other items; releases property to its owners; transfers unclaimed property for inter-departmental use; or arranges for sale of property at auctions as appropriate.
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports.
  • Transport evidence within the Sheriff’s Office and to/from other law enforcement agencies as needed.
  • May assist Evidence Technicians in performing their duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EITHER PATTERN I
Experience:  Two years’ experience receiving and storing materials which has included inventory record keeping in a computerized environment.

OR PATTERN II
Experience:  Two years responsible clerical experience including maintenance of files with a minimum of one year experience in a public law enforcement agency.

License:  Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE

Maintenance of files and records; methods and procedures used in receiving, storing, packing, and issuing supplies; safe methods of lifting heavy objects and performing manual tasks.

ABILITY

Understand and interpret rules and regulations; follow oral and written instructions; learn principles of data entry and computerized inventory systems; establish and maintain effective working relationships; lift heavy objects.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility – Frequent operation of keyboards, sitting, standing, bending squatting, or walking repetitively and/or for extended periods; Lifting –Frequently 30 pounds or less; Occasionally up to 50 pounds; Vision – ability to identify objects and written text to sufficiently read and perform close-up work; normal hand/eye coordination; Dexterity –normal dexterity with frequent holding, reaching, grasping, writing, typing, and repetitive motion; Hearing/Talking – Frequent communication in person and by telephone; Emotional/psychological – Frequent public contact and decision making; frequent concentration required; Special conditions – Frequent exposure to varying temperatures and noise; occasional exposure to outdoors.
