DEFINITION

Under general supervision performs technical library work including supervision of law clerks and inmate workers; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

An employee in this class is responsible performing a wide range of library activities in a custody environment in such functional areas as book circulation, acquisition, and inventory, catalog classification, and physical upkeep of library materials. Incumbents will supervise student law clerks, volunteer assistants, and inmate trustees.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Assesses inmate needs and advises them in making effective use of library resources and services; assists inmates by answering reference questions and selecting print and non-print materials.
  • Orients inmates to library procedures and practices and specialized information sources, specialized library materials collections, and similar service.
  • Prepares reading lists and bibliographies, which may require the use of automated equipment and programs; develops and maintains special files and collections.
  • Plans, develops, and conducts library programs for inmates; contacts various community organizations for library related services.
  • May supervise, train, and evaluate subordinate staff; interns, and inmates.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Completion of 60 semester units from an accredited college or university.

 

AND

 

Experience:   One year of increasingly responsible paid subprofessional or technical library work experience, including work in book acquisition, cataloging, reference, and compilation of bibliographies.

 

Substitution:  Additional-qualifying experience may be substituted for the education on a year for year basis.

KNOWLEDGE

Elementary principles of library procedures, objectives and organization; use of standard library tools; classification and cataloging techniques employed in fiction materials; pre-cataloging techniques in non-fiction materials; library practices and procedures; data processing and research techniques related to library work; a wide variety of library materials including governmental publications; pamphlets, newspapers, manuscripts, and periodicals.

ABILITY

Assess inmate library needs; provide accurate service information; exercise good judgement in making decisions in accordance with laws, rules, regulations, and procedures, and custody policies; classify and catalog a wide range of books and library materials using both manual and computerized systems; plan, direct, and review the work of interns, inmates and volunteers; establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people, including inmates and sworn custody staff; maintain accurate records; communicate effectively orally, and in writing; work in a custody environment.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires the ability to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time; ability to bend, stoop, push, pull and reach overhead; manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard; ability to climb ladders and stairs; vision sufficient to read and work up close; employees may be required to lift and carry materials and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.
