DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs responsible crew leader work in transporting and leading a crew of general relief or alternative work program participants, and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Incumbents of this class transport, assign, train and monitor the work of a variety of work crew participants. This class differs from park Maintenance Worker in that incumbents of the latter class supervise workers while performing their regular park maintenance duties, but are not responsible for transporting, assigning and monitoring them as a full time assignment.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Transports crews of general relief or alternative work program participants to various work sites; evaluates individual skills and abilities to determine work assignments.
  • Trains and monitors workers performing a variety of tasks including litter pickup, hoeing, raking, digging, painting, planting and other types of labor.
  • Confers with park supervisors to determine needs, including type of work to be performed, number of workers needed, and tools and materials needed.
  • Repairs and maintains tools and equipment.
  • Maintains a variety of records including attendance reports, disciplinary reports, incident reports and accident reports; inventories and orders tools and supplies.
  • Evaluates performance and recommends termination from programs; provides information concerning reasons for termination; attends and testifies at hearings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: One-year supervising or participating in the work of a litter control or custody alternative work program.

License: Possession of a valid Class two California driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE

Principles and techniques of supervision and motivation; methods and techniques of trash pick-up; repair, maintenance and use of basic tools; safe driving habits and practices; safe work methods.

ABILITY

Train and monitor others; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; document activities and prepare reports.
