Medical Transcriber Trainee (#RO4100)



DEFINITION

Under immediate supervision, learns to transcribe medical reports from computerized dictating systems; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry level in the medical transcriber series. Incumbents' work is subject to close review while in progress and upon completion. Incumbents are being trained to type a variety of medical reports and are required to learn a variety of specialized typing formats, varied specialized medical terminology and to transcribe reports dictated by a wide variety of individuals with varied speaking speeds.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Transcribes history and physical examinations, consultations, operation reports, x-ray reports, pathology reports, pulmonary function evaluations, clinic evaluations, final summaries, protocols for conferences, letters and other dictation of medical staff.
  • Types from hand written material EKG interpretations, pulmonary function statistics and other medical records.
  • Searches for information needed to complete records; uses a variety of resource materials to ensure correct spelling, terminology and dates; proofreads reports.
  • Maintains record of daily production statistics; distributes completed work as appropriate.
  • Participates in in-service training programs to learn medical definitions and the proper use and spelling of medical terms.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience: One year of office clerical work requiring typing.

    Education: Completion of an in-service training course or academic course in medical terminology.

    License and Certificates: Possession of a valid typing certificate for 45 words per minute.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Basic public relations procedures; basic filing systems; language mechanics and basic phonics; principles of good compositions; computerized word processing programs; how to use dictionaries and other standard resources.

    ABILITY

    Follow oral and written directions; learn office procedures quickly; read and understand job related material; work well and communicate with others; work accurately and systematically; handle stressful situations and work well under pressure; write legibly; match names and numbers.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Mobility-Operation of keyboard; sits for long periods; occasional walking, pushing/pulling, bending/squatting; Lifting-Occasionally lifts 5 to 30 pounds; Visual-Constant use of color perception, hand/eye coordination, depth perception, reading/close-up work, and peripheral field of vision; Dexterity-Constant holding, reaching, grasping, repetitive motion and occasional writing; Hearing/Talking-Constant hearing of normal speech, hearing on the telephone, hearing faint sounds; occasional talking in person and on the telephone. Emotional/Psychological-Occasionally deals with emergency situations; exposure to trauma, grief and death on an occasional basis; occasional public contact; concentrate to transcribe dictation; frequently work alone; and occasionally work nights, weekends and overtime; Environmental Conditions-Exposure to noise.
