DEFINITION

Under general direction, performs technical work in clinical psychology in Mental Health Services, including the analysis, appraisal, classification, counseling, diagnosis and treatment of children, adolescents or adults; and performs related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey level class in the Clinical Psychologist series. Direction is received from a Chief Clinical Psychologist or other senior member of the Clinical Treatment Team.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Selects, administers, scores and interprets personality, intelligence, and other psychological tests.
  • Conducts in-depth family history and diagnostic interviews.
  • Recommends patient treatment programs based on psychological tests, case histories, and other factors; conducts individual, group or family therapy.
  • Attends meetings; acts as liaison between Mental Health Services and other agencies; may act as a consultant to other agencies.
  • Plans and implements in-service education programs.
  • Analyzes data; prepares reports and correspondence.
  • Assists in evaluation of clinical treatment programs.

    • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education: Possession of a doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in Clinical or Counseling Psychology.

     

    Experience: One year of post-doctorate counseling experience in a clinical setting.

     

    Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a license as a Clinical Psychologist issued by the State of California Board of Quality Medical Assurance.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Psychological test procedures, standard test forms and mental measurements used in ascertaining intelligence, aptitude, personality and other related mental traits in children, adolescents and adults; current literature and recent developments in the field of psychology and psychological testing; the application of psychology to social and educational deviation, mental disease, and patient rehabilitation; fundamental types and problems of mental disease and abnormality; community organization processes and mental health consultations.

    ABILITY

    Obtain psychological case information from persons examined and interviewed; interpret psychological information and make sound recommendations based on such information; plan and implement treatment programs; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with patients, families, physicians and other agencies; plan and conduct in-service training programs; prepare reports and correspondence.
