Under immediate supervision, performs diagnostic and therapeutic speech pathology techniques for a variety of disabling conditions; and does other or related work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the pre-licensed class in the Speech Therapist Series. Incumbents are graduates of approved master's degree programs in speech therapy, and are generally working to obtain clinical experience needed for the licensing examinations. Incumbents perform a variety of speech therapy services including assessment, planning, treatment, related documentation and communication. Incumbents work under the immediate supervision of a licensed speech therapist.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Performs speech therapy evaluations of patients and interprets findings.
Plans and implements therapeutic treatment for patients; establishes appropriate treatment goals; uses equipment properly.
Coordinates treatment programs with physicians, nurses, professional and para-professional staff.
Maintains accurate records and prepares written reports.
Attends staff meetings and patient conferences; participates in in-service and staff development classes.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:Graduation from an approved college or university with a master’s degree in communicative disorders (speech therapy).
Special Requirement: Within 60 days of hire, must file applications for: 1) a Clinical Fellowship Year from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association; and 2) the Required Professional Experience to qualify for licensure with the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers’ Board.
KNOWLEDGE
Current principles, methods, techniques, equipment and materials used in speech therapy, possible reactions of and hazards to patients during treatment, and of precautionary and remedial measure; anatomy and physiology related to treatment; psychological and physiological problems of persons with disabling conditions.
ABILITY
Organize and implement speech therapy treatment programs; conduct individual and group treatment programs; interpret and adapt physician’s orders and/or written reports; communicate effectively; work independently; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with patients, families, staff and others; maintain excellent customer relations.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Mobility: Constant keyboard operation; sits, stands, walks, pushes and
pulls, bends and squats frequently; runs
and climbs stairs occasionally; lifts, positions, pushes, and/or transfers
supplies and equipment. Lifting: Lifts up to 30 pounds occasionally;
restrains, lifts/turns heavy objects or people occasionally. Visual: Constant use of overall vision, color
perception, depth perception, hand/eye coordination; reading and close-up work
and peripheral vision. Dexterity: Constant holding, reaching, grasping, and
writing. Repetitive motion is required
occasionally. Hearing/Talking:
Hears and talks in person constantly.
Occasionally hears on telephone/radio, faint sounds, and occasionally
talks on the telephone. Emotional/Psychological:
Occasional exposure to emergency situations, trauma, grief, death, and hazard
materials. Travels occasionally. Position requires constant public contact,
decision making and concentration. Environmental: Occasional
exposure to noise, dirt, dust smoke, fumes, poor ventilation, cold and
heat. Other: Occasional exposure to conflict; must be
capable of working with physically challenged children and adults.
