DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs unlicensed assistive work in caring for the sick and disabled; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a journey level class in the Nursing Assistant series. An employee in this class is responsible for following clearly established procedures in assisting licensed and professional nursing and medical staff in patient care. Incumbents do not administer medication or perform sterile procedures. Work is closely monitored by professional nursing or medical staff and does not require licensing.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Performs routine work in the care of patients, including making beds, changing linens, giving baths and rubs, caring for incontinent patients, lifting, moving and transporting patients; cares for personal effects of patients.
  • Measures and records patient intake and output of foods and fluids as directed; collects urine, stool and sputum specimens; tests urine and records results; may give non-medicated enemas.
  • Assists professional staff in performing tests, procedures and examinations of patients in critical care units.
  • Serves trays, feeds patients, and removes trays.
  • Takes and records vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure.
  • Maintains patient unit in a neat and clean manner; maintains supplies; removes soiled linen and re-stocks supplies.
  • Assists in a central supply unit; cleans, sterilizes, packages, sets up and distributes medical equipment, linen and related supplies.
  • May assist in ambulance or clinic car service; may administer CPR, use resuscitation equipment and administer first aid.
  • Keeps routine records and reports.
  • Participates in staff development training programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EITHER I

Experience:  Six months as a Nursing Assistant Trainee at San Joaquin County General Hospital.

 

OR II

Experience:  Six months performing non-professional nursing work in an acute care hospital.

 

OR III

Experience:  One year performing non-professional nursing work in a convalescent hospital, home health care agency or similar sub-acute facility.

 

Substitution:  Successful completion of appropriate clinical training in a Licensed Vocational Nurse or Registered Nurse curriculum may be substituted for the required experience.

 

Special Requirement: Specialized training or experience may be required for assignment to or continued assignment to specialized areas.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic arithmetic, basic hygiene and health standards; basic institutional safety procedures including safe lifting techniques; basic hospital sanitation practices; names, uses and care of patient care supplies; behavior of patients.

ABILITY

Work well with others, attend to the personal needs of the physically and mentally ill; accurately take and record vital signs; deal with patients sympathetically and tactfully; follow oral and written instructions in exact detail; utilize advanced office equipment and computers; lift and move patients; practice excellent customer relations.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility-Operation of a data entry device; constant walking required; frequent pushing/pulling; constant bending/squatting; occasional stair climbing; Lifting-Constant lifting duties required of 5-70+ lbs.; constant restraining, lifting/turning of heavy objects and/or people; Vision-Constant reading and close-up work; Dexterity-Constant holding, reaching, grasping and writing; Hearing/Talking-Constant hearing and talking in person and on the telephone; Emotional/Psychological-Occasional exposure to grief and trauma; constant public contract; Special Requirements-May require working nights, weekends, and overtime; Environmental-Frequent contact with hazardous materials.
