DEFINITION

Under general supervision; conducts a variety of professional nursing services in clinics; provides nursing, educational, and health counseling services in connection with the control and prevention of disease and adverse health conditions; and does related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey level in the Registered Nurse class series. Incumbents are expected to be fully trained and certified. Job responsibilities require the ability to provide professional nursing services with minimal guidance and supervision.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Provides a variety of professional nursing services.
  • May interview and take case histories of patients; gives prescribed treatments; records data; makes necessary referrals.
  • Provides nursing services in community health programs through clinics.
  • May demonstrate and teach hygiene and nursing care.
  • Works with other staff in planning and coordinating health service programs.
  • Gathers information and maintains records, insuring proper confidentiality of medical information.
  • Provides some training in nursing practices and procedures for other staff, particularly Nurses' Aides.
  • Develops information and prepares reports.
  • Attends meetings and conferences to maintain current information on public health problems and issues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

 

Experience:  Two years of responsible work experience in providing professional nursing services.

 

License:  Possession of a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.

KNOWLEDGE

Principles, methods, trends, practices and procedures of nursing as applied to a variety of health needs and practices; current trends and practices in professional nursing; preventive medicine; causes, treatment, prevention, and early detection of communicable diseases, chronic diseases and handicapping conditions; child growth and development and promotion of maternal and child health; conduct of health clinics.

ABILITY

Perform professional nursing services; plan and conduct clinic services; provide training for other staff; provide instruction in disease prevention and promote proper nursing care services; collect data and prepare reports; effectively represent San Joaquin County Public Health Agency and nursing services with the public, community organizations, and other government agencies; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
