Under immediate supervision, performs safety checks of hospital equipment and power sources, performs routine preventive maintenance and repairs and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3 Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

This is the entry level in the Biomedical Equipment Technician series. Incumbents perform safety testing of equipment, assist in the maintenance of medical equipment and may perform more difficult work on a relief basis or for training purposes.

• Tests electrical circuits and components to locate ground potential or current leakage that may be hazardous to patients or employees.
• Participates in equipment and safety inspections; records electrical measurement readings on equipment history files.
• Learns to repair and adjust a variety of medical equipment; learns to utilize schematic diagrams and test instruments to locate malfunctions. May perform routine repairs and preventive maintenance.
• Assists in maintenance of records on tests, inspections, repairs and preventive maintenance programs.
• May request repair parts; may stock or request items for spare parts inventory.

Education: Completion of 30 semester units in an accredited college or university with a major in electronics or a related area or completion of an advanced military electronics school.

Substitution: Experience in the repair, maintenance or modification of medical equipment may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.

Fundamentals of analog and digital electronics working principals of electricity; A.C. and D.C. network analysis related math; occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Learn to repair and adjust medical equipment; follow oral and written instructions exactly; maintain written records; express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
