Cadastral Technician I (#RE0201)



DEFINITION

Under immediate supervision, performs routine drafting and property verification work in map preparation and property records maintenance for tax assessment purposes; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This class is the entry-level class in the Cadastral Technician series. Incumbents initially are assigned duties of a training nature and work under immediate supervision, but as knowledge and experience are attained, more responsible work is assigned and supervision becomes more general.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Learns GIS parcel base coverage.
  • Learns basic-mapping procedures such as splits, segregations and combines, either through a manual process or using CADD.
  • Learns State Board of Equalization mapping standards.
  • Draw new subdivisions using CADD.
  • Learns to convert descriptions into split parcels, manually or using CADD.
  • Reads and interprets legal descriptions and deed effect.
  • Computes acreage's and square footages.
  • Searches records at Recorder's Office, other county offices, and title companies for legal title chain.
  • Inputs data into personal and on-line computers.
  • Answers telephone and counter mapping inquiries.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education: Completion of 12 units of drafting in civil engineering or drafting technology from an accredited college or university.

    Substitution: One year of experience using Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) in cadastral drafting, topographic drafting or civil engineering may be substituted for the required education.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Terminology and nomenclature relevant to mapping and Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD), GIS, drafting equipment and practices; the elementary principles of map direction; freehand and template lettering; trigonometry.

    ABILITY

    Perform routine drafting work; inking on mylar media; work at exacting tasks for extended periods; use calculators, personal and on-line computers, printers, and plotters; read and interpret legal descriptions, deeds, survey data, tract descriptions, and existing maps; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Mobility-Frequent operation of a data entry device, other office machinery; repetitive motion; sitting for long periods; occasional walking, standing, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting; Lifting/Carrying-Occasionally 10 pounds or less; Visual-Constant good overall vision and reading/close-up work; frequent color perception and use of eye/hand coordination; occasional use of depth perception and peripheral vision; Hearing/Talking-Frequent hearing of normal speech, hearing/talking on the telephone, talking in person; Emotional/Psychological-Frequent decision making, concentration; occasional public contact; Special Requirements-Operate motor vehicle as required to attend off-site meetings.
