DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs responsible supervisory work in supervising and participating in the work of Transfer Truck Drivers; and does related work in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

An employee of this class supervises a crew of drivers, participates in the work of the crew, and may supervise other solid waste workers as necessary.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Supervises and participates in the operation of transfer trucks, backhoes, bulldozers and other light and heavy equipment; drives loads to other sites; dumps and reloads trucks.
  • Makes routine repairs and adjustments to equipment; regularly checks or inspects brakes, lights, tires, fuel levels, and auxiliary equipment; does routine preventative maintenance.
  • Inspects equipment; schedules servicing for transfer vehicles.
  • Trains drivers in safe operation and maintenance of equipment; ensures safe working practices and conditions.
  • Prepares reports of day's work activities, mileage, downtime and other required reports; evaluates employee performance and prepares performance evaluations; counsels and disciplines employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Four years of paid experience in operating and maintaining heavy trucks.

License: Possession of a valid Class I California driver's permit at time of application and valid California Class I driver's license at time of appointment.

KNOWLEDGE

Principles and practices of supervision and training; the principles and practices of heavy truck and light and heavy construction equipment operations and maintenance; occupational hazards and safety procedures relative to operation of equipment; traffic laws; basic record keeping practices.

ABILITY

Train and supervise others; deliver oral and written instructions; operate and service heavy trucks and other equipment; prepare reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
