DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs responsible technical work in the control and eradication of noxious weeds, insects, fungus and vertebrate pests; may supervise Park Workers and Work Program Participants; and performs related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a multi-faceted single position combining licensed skills in pesticide application, transportation and supervision of work crews, and transportation and operation of maintenance/construction equipment. Additionally, park maintenance and construction work is performed and sometimes supervised.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Mixes, loads, and applies pesticides within areas of County Parks jurisdiction.
  • Inspects pesticide application needs, suggests proper course of action needed to control weeds, insects, and vertebrate pests.
  • Conducts inventory of supplies, purchases, transports, stores, mixes and applies pesticides using and caring for the associated equipment.
  • Loads, transports, operates, and maintains various equipment including, but not limited to, spray rigs, tractors, backhoe trucks, aerial lifts, and trenchers.
  • Operates a bus and transports and supervises a work labor crew for park related work.
  • Performs and/or supervises a variety of park maintenance and construction work.
  • Completes various forms and reports relative to pesticide application, materials acquisition, and other reports as directed.
  • Provides training and direction to park workers, temporary employees and work program participants.
  • Occasionally supervises employees in lower classifications who work on pest control or park projects.
  • Identifies pesticide problems and makes recommendations on pesticide needs and necessary supplies or correction of hazardous conditions.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience: Three years of park, landscape, or similar work which included mixing, loading and applying of pesticides for weeds, insects, fungus, and vertebrate pests; and which includes at least one year working in grounds maintenance, repair, and construction, as well as operation of heavy equipment related to grounds maintenance.

    License: Possession of a current California Department of Pesticide Regulations Pest Control Applicators and/or Advisors License.

    Note: (1) If offered employment, applicant must obtain a California Class A driver's license with "P" and "H" endorsement within the first 90 days of employment.

    (2) If offered employment, applicant must obtain all categories on pesticide applicators license for park maintenance area of need prior to the completion of the one-year probationary period.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Pest control methods, and materials; principles and techniques of grounds and building maintenance; methods and techniques of equipment operation, transportation and maintenance; and supervisory practices and abilities.

    ABILITY

    Understand and carry out oral and written instruction; do heavy manual labor occasionally under adverse weather conditions; work cooperatively with others; supervise others; load, transport, and operate a passenger bus, pesticide application equipment, and various maintenance and construction equipment; complete assigned paperwork.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Mobility-Occasional sitting for long periods; frequent standing, walking, pushing/pulling and driving; occasional operation of heavy equipment; climbing ladders, stairs and crawling; Lifting-Constant to frequent lifting of 5 to 30 pounds; occasional lifting of over 70 pounds; occasional restraining, lifting/turning of heavy objects or people; Vision-Constant vision with frequent color perception, eye/hand coordination and depth perception; occasional reading/close up work; and frequent peripheral vision; Dexterity-Frequent holding, reaching, grasping, repetitive motion; and occasional writing; Hearing/Talking-Frequent to occasional hearing and talking on telephone and radio; Emotional/Psychological-Occasional exposure to emergency situations heights, hazardous materials, public contact; frequent decision making; frequent working alone; Special Conditions-May require frequent shift changes, odd hours, ten hour work days, occasional overtime and weekend work.
