DEFINITION

Under immediate supervision, performs skilled-work in the control and eradication of noxious weeds, insects, and vertebrate pests; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey level class in the Pest Abatement Operator series.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Sprays noxious weeds along County roads and on county rights-of-way and private properties as part of the weed control, eradication and sterilization programs.
  • Places various toxicants and bird traps on county rights-of-way and private properties as part of the week control, eradication and sterilization programs.
  • Sprays and injects trees on County rights-of-way and easements to control insects and diseases.
  • Mixes, bags, labels, and stores various herbicides, insecticides, and rodenticides; builds and repairs bird and rodent traps and other equipment.
  • Applies varied mathematical formulas for the mixing of various pesticides and the calibration of application equipment.
  • Answers questions from the public concerning use and safety of pest control materials.
  • Performs a variety of maintenance duties for the Agricultural Department.
  • Operates and maintains pest control equipment including trucks, tractors, tank trailers, spray rigs, and weed and rodent guns. Uses such equipment as the arc welders, acetylene torch, metal lathe, and spray painting equipment.
  • Maintains records of work performed.
  • May supervise Pest Abatement Operator I's and temporary workers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:  Two years in weed, insect and vertebrate pest control work.

License:  Possession of a valid California driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE

The basic methods, equipment and materials used in abating weeds, insects and vertebrate pests; safety measures used in handling pesticides and herbicides; first aid procedures for pesticide intoxication; characteristics of various weeds, insects and vertebrate pest.

ABILITY

Follow oral and written directions; operate and maintain application equipment; maintain routine records; maintain effective public relations.
