Highway Maintenance Worker (#RC0501)

Under general supervision, performs maintenance and operates equipment in the construction and maintenance of County roads and flood control channels; maintains and installs traffic control devices; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

This is the journey level class in the Maintenance Worker series.  Incumbents in this class work independently in maintaining and constructing roads and flood control channels, or the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices.

• May act as lead worker on road and channel maintenance crews in patching, repairing, and maintaining County roads and flood control channels. 
• Transports and applies road and levee construction and maintenance materials; may perform minor concrete work; loads trucks with construction materials.
• Installs and maintains traffic signs, pavement legends and symbols, roadway center and edge lines, and reflective pavement markers; fabricates traffic signs. 
• Mows weeds and grasses along County rights-of-ways and channels; sprays weeds along roads, levees, channels, creeks and sloughs; repairs fences and gates; cleans and clears roadways, basins, culverts, and drainage ditches of brush and debris;  hauls debris to disposal sites;  lays pipes;  may act as laborer on tree crews. 
• Assists with the operation of highway paint striping equipment, or with paint delivery systems and accessory equipment in the placement of legends and markings on County roads.  
• Installs construction signs and barricades; serves as flagger for construction, maintenance and traffic operations. 
• Operates and does routine maintenance of a variety of road and channel construction and maintenance equipment, including single-axle dump trucks, jackhammers, chisels, torches, compressor and air-activated tools, light front end loaders, and other related equipment. 
• Prepares and maintains written reports of daily activity.

Experience:  One year equivalent to a Maintenance Worker in San Joaquin County service.

License:  Possession of a valid Class B California driver’s license with tanker and airbrake endorsements.  The Class B requirement is waived for employees who were in the class prior to December 12, 1990.

Methods, practices, tools, and materials used in highway maintenance and repair work;  operating and mechanical principles; operation and routine maintenance of trucks, and light highway construction equipment;  safe working practices and procedures;  uses, installation, operation, and maintenance of traffic control devices, signs and road way markings;  operation, maintenance and repair of airless painting equipment.

Understand and follow oral and written directions;  lead subordinate staff; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; operate motor vehicles, trucks, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic controls or the construction, maintenance and repair of road ways and flood control channels; perform physically demanding work for long periods; sustain physical exertion and coordination in adverse conditions; operate computers and related software; establish and maintain safe, effective and cooperative working relationships with others.
