Weights & Measures Inspector II (#RA0401)



DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs a variety of responsible technical work in inspecting and conducting tests of weighing and measuring devices and packaged commodities for compliance with State Weights and Measures laws and regulations; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey level class in the Weights and Measures series.  An employee in this class is a journey level Weights and Measures Inspector, licensed in at least three licensing categories.  Work is performed independently in accordance with established procedures and techniques, but is subject to review or supervision while in progress.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Inspects and tests accuracy of commercial weighing and measuring devices for accuracy and compliance with established tolerances; condemns use of commercial weighing and measuring devices not meeting required standards; issues and attaches seals to such devices meeting required standards. 
  • Performs a variety of investigations of suspected illegal acts or unlawful practices concerning commercial weights and measures; contacts and questions complainants and witnesses; collects available evidence; provides information concerning cases for further legal or administrative action; may appear in court. 
  • Inspects packages and commodities,  other goods and petroleum products for accuracy of weight or measure, correct labeling, and adherence to required specifications. 
  • Measures capacity of large tanks. 
  • Verifies Weightmasters’  licenses and  determines whether  certificates of weights are being issued correctly. 
  • Verifies box tares  at canneries  and processing   plants; makes  complete report of findings. 
  • Conducts tests of meters used for registering dispensing of liquids, such as gasoline, oil and grease; places “out of order” tags on meter if defective and re-inspects meter after repair to insure that meter is correct; affixes seal. 
  • Works with Weights and Measures officials from other governmental agencies. 
  • Assists with orientation and training of subordinate inspectors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

License:  Possession of three valid licenses as a Weights and Measures Inspector Issued by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.  Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license.  Possession of a valid Class B California driver’s license, if required by nature of assignment.

KNOWLEDGE

The laws, rules and regulations relating to the use of commercial weighing and measuring devices; the methods and techniques used in verifying the accuracy of such devices within allowed tolerance.

ABILITY

Establish and maintain effective public relations; enforce laws, rules and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; prepare clear and concise reports; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; use and maintain various testing instruments and devices utilized in the weights and measures field; lift and carry 50 pounds; lift and carry a 5-gallon container of liquid for a distance of 50 feet.
