Weights & Measures Inspector I (#RA0400)
DEFINITIONUnder supervision, performs responsible technical work in inspecting and conducting tests of weighing and measuring devices and packaged commodities for compliance with State weights and measures laws and regulations; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules. CLASS CHARACTERISTICSThis position is the entry-level class in the Weights and Measures series. Work is performed independently in accordance with established procedures and techniques but is subject to review or supervision while in progress. TYPICAL DUTIES
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSLicense: Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license. Ability to obtain a valid Class B California driver’s license before the expiration of the probationary period, if required by nature of assignment.
EITHER I License: Possession of a valid Weights and Measures Inspector’s License issued by the California Department of Food and Agriculture. OR II Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course works in chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, or closely related field.
Substitution: Experience in the investigation or enforcement of Weights and Measures or Agricultural Inspection laws; the inspection, maintenance, repair or installation of weighing or measuring instruments or equipment; consumer protection or resolution of consumer complaints in a public or private consumer affairs agency; law enforcement or investigation work in a federal, state or local jurisdiction; or responsible quality control or quantity control work in the production of consumer commodities may be substituted for up to two years of the required education on a year-for-year basis. KNOWLEDGEThe laws, rules and regulations relating to the use of commercial weighing and measuring devices; methods and techniques used in verifying the accuracy of such devices within allowed tolerance. ABILITYEstablish and maintain effective public relations; enforce laws, rules and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; prepare clear and concise reports; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; use and maintain various testing instruments and devices used in the weights and measures field; lift and carry 50 pounds; lift and carry a 5-gallon container of liquid for a distance of 50 feet.
