Position Description:

The Assistant will assist the IT Manager to enhance and maintain the Department's IT needs.

The Assistant will provide general assistant to the IT Manager including:

Management of 125 Windows XP computers, 112 Cisco VoIP phone system, and 3 Xerox machines.

Management of 2 Windows 2008 VMware servers, 2 Dell KACE VMware servers, and 1 Open text fax appliance.

Provide desktop support for 115 employees

Troubleshoot and repair Cisco switches.

Provide training to employees

Responsibilities Include:

 

Monitor, operate and manage 125 Windows XP & 7 computers, including 2 Windows 2008, 2 Dell KACE Virtual Machines, and 1 Open text Fax Appliance to insure proper functioning; and recommend solutions to correct malfunctions.

Implement computer applications for our department.

Install and configure Windows XP & 7 computer and/or Cisco VoIP hardware and software; service and maintain equipment.

Debug, maintain and document the above software programs and procedures used to enhance existing local area network.

Research, analyze and test application or system software for compatibility and capability to specific job applications and assignments; may recommend hardware and software purchases.

Provide technical assistance to users; escalate and coordinate problem resolution activities; consult on feasibility, costs and benefits of additions or enhancements; perform help-desk functions.

Maintain IT materials and supply inventories.

Retrieve and download and/or upload data; assist with the transition of data/operations between systems; provide on-site technical support for 3 Xerox machines.

Perform and monitor scheduled job executions, including system and application backups and archiving tasks, on multiple, distinctive platforms.

Analyze and verify statistical information in the virtual servers to insure the accuracy of computer reports and data integrity.

Verify system backups and control records with Department of Technology; assist in the maintenance of files and libraries; create logical directory structure; may be responsible for retention and storage of databases.

Assess and coordinate user training.

Coordinate and schedule hardware repairs; perform routine equipment maintenance, repairs and modifications on various computer systems and related equipment; create user groups and individual accounts.

Research and analyze data; compile, tabulate and generate reports; document procedures and programs; may develop written help materials.

Perform work related to security and disaster recovery needs such as system backup and/or restoration.

Perform help desk support for employees

Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Computer Technology or a related field from an accredited college or university; AND three (3) year of full time equivalent experience performing duties described for this class.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

Certifications such as MCP, A+, MCSE, VCP, CCENT

The ability to prioritize, be attentive to details, maintain confidentiality, and provide exceptional client service is required. Demonstrated communication, interpersonal, organizational, analytical, problem-solving and computer skills required.

A sense of urgency and a commitment to timely completion of projects. Attention to detail along with a commitment to quality and confidentiality.

Ability to multitask in fast paced environment with great attention to detail

 

Supplemental Information:

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work requirements. Some positions may require sufficient strength and coordination for lifting, pushing, pulling and/or carrying the weight of computer equipment.  May require bending, stooping and/or crawling in order to install or repair computer or printer cables.  May require hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity for semi-skilled movements such as, taking apart casings, installing parts, reconnecting computers and data entry.  This position may be required rotational, shift, and overtime work. 

 

Appointment Type: Temporary-Exempt: Appointee serves at the discretion of the Appointing Officer for a maximum duration of no more than 1040 hours.

Computer kiosks are located in the lobby of the Department of Human Resources, 44 Gough Street, San Francisco, for use by the public. The hours of operation are from 8:00a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, information systems or a closely related field.

Experience:
Three (3) years directly related experience that demonstrates a wide range of system administration and/or computer/network operations knowledge and responsibilities.

Substitution:
Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis.  Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.

 All employees hired on or after January 10, 2009 will be required (pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section A8.432) to contribute 2% of pre-tax compensation to fund retiree healthcare. In addition, most employees are required to make a member contribution towards retirement, typically a 7.5% of compensation.
