CLASS 3417 GARDENER

 

 

APPOINTMENT TYPE:

 

As Needed, non-benefited positions currently located at San Francisco General Hospital’s Facilities Department.

 

Under supervision, the Gardener performs essential job functions which include:

 

·        Routine maintenance and landscaping renovation tasks in the care of parks, squares, playgrounds, athletic fields, landscaped areas, easements and traffic islands;

·        Responsible for using various types of gardening tools and equipment;

·        Follow oral and written instructions and established methods and procedures;

·        Perform other related duties as assigned/required.

 

Nature of Positions:  The nature of the work requires considerable physical effort in the performance of duties.  Gardeners are required to work outdoors in rainy or otherwise increment weather and may be exposed to infectious or hazardous materials.  Some positions require working in heavily trafficked areas.

Minimum Qualifications

1.Three years of verifiable experience in the care, construction or maintenance of landscaped areas by planting, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating, pruning, and controlling pests in the following areas: sports and athletic natural turf fields, golf courses, parks, ornamental gardens, arboreta, greenhouses, nurseries, botanical gardens and/or public landscaped areas;

OR

2.Possession of a Certificate of Achievement from an accredited college or university in horticulture, landscaping, gardening, nursery and garden center operation, commercial cut flower and greenhouse production or related field and two years of verifiable experience in the care, construction or maintenance of landscaped areas by planting, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating, pruning, and controlling pests in the following areas: sports and athletic natural turf fields, golf courses, parks, ornamental gardens, arboreta, greenhouses, nurseries, botanical gardens and/or public landscaped areas;

OR

3.Possession of an Associate of Arts or Science degree from an accredited college or university in horticulture, landscaping, gardening, nursery and garden center operation, commercial cut flower and greenhouse production or related field and 18 months of verifiable experience in the care, construction or maintenance of landscaped areas by planting, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating, pruning, and controlling pests in the following areas: sports and athletic natural turf fields, golf courses, parks, ornamental gardens, arboreta, greenhouses, nurseries, botanical gardens and/or public landscaped areas;

OR

4.Completion of the City and County of San Francisco's gardener apprenticeship program (4000 hours). (Applicants who have completed 3000 hours may apply and be placed under waiver pending successful completion of the gardener apprenticeship program). AND

5.Possession of a valid California driver's license.

Notes:

1. Eligibles reached for employment by a department must be insurable under the department’s automobile liability insurance policy. After employment, employees must maintain insurability and valid driver license.
2. Ability to safely and correctly lift, drag and/or move with assistance large and/or heavy plants and equipment to truck bed level, and the ability to kneel, bend and squat for considerable periods of time. The probationary period will be used to evaluate this qualification.
3. One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hours work week.). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Computer kiosks are located in the lobby of the Department of Human Resources, 1 South Van Ness Avenue, 4th Floor, San Francisco, for use by the public. The hours of operation are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through
Friday.

Selection Procedures

The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluation qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Benefits

All employees hired on or after January 10, 2009 will be required (pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section A8.432) to contribute 2% of pre-tax compensation to fund retiree healthcare.
