5218 Structural Engineer

 

Under general direction, performs difficult and responsible professional structural engineering work in the field and office. Essential functions of the class include: performs structural engineering analysis and design for new structures or modifications to existing structures, code review work, and engineering research; prepares and reviews structural plans, designs, specifications, cost estimates and reports for all types of new construction, alteration work, and complex structures; verifies contract drawings to ensure engineering design sufficiency, conformance to specifications, and established drafting standards, nomenclature and drawing symbols; conducts field investigations on land slides, structural failures, potential hazards, complex structural problems and prepares recommendations; interprets and coordinates existing engineering policies and methods with other departments and contractors; visits project sites during construction to verify compliance with design documents; attends progress and design coordination meetings; makes regular responsible contacts with professional engineering personnel and contractors; responds to inquiries related to structural design and analysis, and requests for information from the general public, contractors and other agencies; supervises professional and technical staff engaged in engineering work; and performs related duties as required.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  1. Six (6) years of verifiable professional engineering experience in engineering design, estimating, specification preparation and building construction or inspection, including at least two (2) years of experience supervising other engineers; AND
  2. Possession of a valid California License as a Registered Structural Engineer.

    Notes:

    a.  Most positions require a valid California driver’s license.

    b.  Some positions require use of own vehicle.

Selection Procedures

The names of all candidates meeting the Minimum Qualifications will be placed on an employment register for referral to hiring departments according to specialty areas and disciplines that were indicated on the supplemental application. Candidates’ scores and ranks on the register will be determined by an evaluation of the supplemental application.

Departments will contact applicants whose experience/skills match department needs and will conduct further selection processes to make final hiring decisions. Applicants selected for hire by a department will be placed on an eligible list for permanent appointment to that department. The eligibility period for successful candidates will be twelve (12) months.

Candidates may request an extension of eligibility prior to their eligibility period expiring. Eligibility extensions can be granted for an additional twelve (12) months. Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of List (ROL). No refusals will be allowed. The hiring department may conduct additional selection processes to make final hiring decisions.
