The essential functions of a Psychiatric Technician include: administering medications; observing, recording, and reporting patient's/client's physical & psychological condition and behavior; establishing therapeutic relationships with patients/clients; implementing therapeutic activities; assisting and encouraging patients/clients in daily living activities; using appropriate intervention techniques and strategies; participating in training programs; interacting with patients/clients, their families, significant others and health team members; and performing crisis intervention and psychological outreach services. And performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. License: Possession of a valid California Psychiatric Technician License. A photocopy of the license must be attached with your application. Information concerning the California Psychiatric Technician License may be obtained from the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners, 1414 K Street, Room 103, Sacramento, CA95814, (916) 445-0793.
NATURE OF POSITIONS: Positions are located within the Department of Public Health, with positions located at San Francisco GeneralHospital - Psychiatric Services Department, SFGH Mental Health Rehabilitation Facility, and Community Mental Health Programs including the Mobile Crisis Treatment Team. Positions require considerable physical effort in controlling or restraining violent patients/clients, with continuous exposure to conditions which may result in accidents or injuries or other uncomfortable situations.

SELECTION PROCEDURES :
Oral/Performance Examination: WEIGHT: 100%
Candidates may be tested to determine their relative knowledge, ability and skill levels in job related areas. These areas may include but not be limited to: Knowledge of basic physio-psychopathology; ability to perform basic nursing procedures; knowledge of legal requirements; knowledge of treatment modalities; interpersonal relations ability; knowledge of pharmacology and oral communication ability.

2. The Rule of Three Scores will be the Certification Rule for this eligible list.
3. All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
4. The number of persons to be placed on an eligible list will be determined by the needs of the department; therefore applicants who receive passing scores are not guaranteed placement on an eligible list.
5. Eligible lists generated from these announcement will have a list duration of six (6) months.
6. No waivers will be allowed.
7. Persons hired at S.F. GeneralHospital or transferring from within the Dept. of Public Health, will be required to pass a written Pharmacology Exam within three (3) months from the date of hire/transfer as a condition of continued employment. Prior to the written Pharmacology Exam, a self-paced learning module will be available to the psychiatric technician.
8. Employees must maintain valid licensure as a condition of employment.
9. Some positions may require bilingual fluency in a variety of languages depending upon the department's bilingual needs. Only those eligibles who pass the bilingual proficiency test will be considered for bilingual positions. Applicants must indicate on the application form the language(s) in which they claim proficiency.
