MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING
TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: Current Permanent Civil Service employees in Class 2320 Registered Nurse are encouraged to apply.
Location: San Francisco General Hospital & Trauma Center’s
Utilization Management Department
Hours: One (1) Full-time and One (1) Part-time
Patient/Client Population: adults and children
Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse must perform the following essential job functions:
· Coordinate the integration of various services into the patient care, discharge, and home planning processes with other hospital departments, external service organizations, agencies and healthcare facilities;
· Conduct concurrent medical record review using InterQual criteria as approved by medical staff, Joint Commission, CMS and other agencies;
· Act as a patient advocate;
· Investigate and report adverse occurrences and perform staff education related to resource utilization, level of care, and discharge planning aspects of healthcare delivery;
· Promote effective and efficient utilization of clinical resources;
· Mobilize resources and interview, as needed, to achieve expected goal to assist in achieving desired clinical outcomes within the desired timeframes;
· Ensure that patient tests are appropriate and necessary and are carried out within the established timeframe and results are promptly available;
· Conduct and document review for appropriate utilization of services from adminission through discharge;
· Evaluate patient satisfaction and quality of care procedures and DRG’s;
· Communicate with physicians and private payers at regular intervals throughout hospitalization and develop an effective working relationship;
· Initiate and present ‘denial letters’ as appropriate;
· Assess physicians to maintain appropriate cost, case and desired patient outcomes;
· Complete expanded assessment of patients and family needs at time of admission;
· Assess patient’s progress through expected hospital course;
· Service as a patient advocate by enhancing collaborative relationships to maximize the patient’s and family’s ability to make informed decisions;
· Participate in interdisciplinary patient care rounds and/or conferences to review treatment goals, and to optimize resource utilization;
· Collaborate with clinical staff in the development and implementation of the plan of care and achievement of goals;
· Participate in the development and implementation of patient care policies and protocols;
· Appeal cases to various payer sources as necessary;
· Utilize technology in the documentation and review of cases; and
· Perform other related duties as assigned/required.
Specialty G: Medical-Surgical Nursing
1. Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License.
This position requires six (6) months of case management experience in a healthcare facility.
NOTE: The American Nurse Credentialing Center defines nursing case management as
“A collaborative approach to provide and coordinate health care services to a defined population which includes five components:
Nurse case managers participate with their clients to identify and facilitate options and services for meeting individuals’ health needs, with the goal of decreasing fragmentation and duplication of care, and enhancing quality, cost-effective clinical outcomes.”
The above minimum qualification reflects special conditions associated with the position to be filled. They may differ from the standard minimum qualifications associated with this class code.
· Five (5) years of verifiable experience as a Registered Nurse in a general acute care hospital.
The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate Requirement / Provision:
Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association is required as a provision to employment for all positions. Eligibles who do not possess such a certification may participate in this examination process and be appointed to a position(s), but will be required to obtain the certificate within two (2) weeks of hire date and maintain validity throughout length of employment. A photocopy of the valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate must be provided to the appropriate supervisor of the appointment within the allotted time frame. Failure to demonstrate/show proof of possession of valid certification within two (2) weeks of hire date and throughout length of employment may result in dismissal and/or termination of employment.

Oral Examination: Candidates will be interviewed to determine their relative knowledge, ability and skill level in one or more of the following job related areas as appropriate.
