Under supervision, the 3610 Library Assistant performs general and varied non-professional library work. The essential functions of this classification include: performing circulation and registration duties; checking and verifying records; receiving and recording payment of fines; providing information to the public; assisting library patrons; creating library documents such as book orders, book lists, circulation reports, overdue notices, bibliographies, backlists, borrower’s register cards, paging lists, clearing hold lists, daily cash reports, desk schedules, ADA checklists and other related documents; accessing and updating records, reports and files; maintaining library records; utilizing a computer to retrieve information and input data; shelving and retrieving books and other library materials using alphabetical, numerical, chronological and Dewey Decimal classification systems; performing physical processing of library materials; performing routine book repair as needed; operating microfilm machines and scanners; performing simple maintenance on copy machines; filing and processing new periodicals, newspaper clippings and other information; providing direction, training and/or coaching to Library Pages; entering data; and performing related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Nine (9) months (1160 hours) of verifiable clerical experience in a library performing tasks equivalent to Class 3602 Library Page (verification/proof of experience is required at time of filing application); OR

2. Three (3) semester or four (4) quarter units of college course work in library studies (verification/proof of education is required at time of filing application).

Nature of Work:

Physical Requirements:

Positions in this classification include the ability to sustain physical effort involving considerable amounts of pushing and pulling library book carts and other library equipment, packing and unpacking library materials standing, bending, squatting, kneeling, lifting and twisting to perform duties associated with daily tasks. May lift and/or move with assistance objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds or more.

Special Requirements:

Some positions in this class are subject to irregular work schedules and may require evening and/or weekend work; and require constant public contact. Position in this classification may be required to work at various locations within the Library system.

Notes:

1. Some positions in this class may require possession of bilingual skills. Eligibles who do not possess the designated bilingual skills will not be appointed to bilingual positions. A language proficiency test may be administered prior to appointment to these positions.

2. Some positions in this class are subject to irregular work schedules, which may involve evening and weekend work.

3. May be required to push, pull and lift with assistance objects weighing fifty (50) pounds or more.

All education and/or experience used to meet the minimum qualifications must be verified.

 

Qualifying education must be verified by copy of diploma showing major or transcripts showing coursework completed. Verification of qualifying experience must be on the employer’s letterhead, show the applicant’s name, dates of service, job title(s), duties actually performed for each position, and must be signed by the employer. Qualifying experience may be verified by performance evaluations showing duties performed. City and County employees will receive credit for the duties of the class to which appointed. Credit for experience obtained outside of the employee's class will only be allowed if recorded in accordance with the provisions of Civil Service Commission Rules. Applicants who cannot obtain the required verification may request a waiver of the verification requirement by submitting a separate signed statement by the final filing date, explaining the reason for the request. Waiver requests will not automatically be granted but will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Failure to provide either the required verification or a request for waiver will result in rejection of application.

 

**Verification of library experience gained by employees working for the San Francisco Public Library will be automatically verified by a review of the Human Resources Information System data. If you are employed by the San Francisco Public Library, you do not need to submit experience verification, however, if you have other qualifying experience from another library, you do need to submit verification documents to support the outside work experience.

Selection Plan

Written Multiple Choice Examination (Weight: 100%): Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a written examination designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not be limited to: ability to file and retrieve materials coded numerically, alphabetically, and by the Dewey Decimal classification system; ability to read and understand written instructions; ability to transfer numerical and other information to and from various types of records; ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds; knowledge of common library terminology, operations and practices such as Dewey Decimal Systems, author/title/subject headings, and call numbers; knowledge of general office work; ability to communicate in writing in a clear, concise and easily understandable manner to departmental managers, vendors, the general public, supervisors and subordinate personnel. This also refers to the ability to prepare accurate form reports; read and understand written instruction; and to communicate information clearly and effectively in writing; and other related duties as assigned.

Candidates must achieve a passing score on the written exam in order to be ranked on the eligible list. This is a standardized examination and, therefore, test questions and answers are not available for public inspection or review.

The score that you achieve on the examinations shall be valid and "banked" for three years, starting from the date of the examination. This means that, during this three-year time period, you will not be required to take this test again should you apply and be found eligible for a future announcement for which this particular test is used. If the test for this future announcement is held within 6 months of the date of this examination, your score will be automatically applied to that announcement. However, after six months, you have the option to either (a) apply your test score to the other announcement or (b) re-take the test. Re-testing is permitted no sooner than six months from the date of the examination and only in association with your eligibility for another announcement for which this test is used. Please note that, should you re-test, your re-test score would become your official score going forward since it is the most recent (even if it turns out to be lower than your original score).

Candidate scores on this examination may also be applied to other announcements involving other job titles, when directed by the Human Resources Director.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Conclusion

Eligible List:
The eligible list resulting from this examination is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 12 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

Upon approval of the Human Resource Director (see Civil Service Rule 111A.26.5), the eligible list resulting from this announcement may be used by other departments that also use this classification or a similar classification.
