General Job Description:

Under the supervision of a Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician supports the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients served by the San Francisco Department of Public Health.  Essential duties include:  accurately preparing, compounding and mixing drugs and pharmaceuticals; prepackaging and labeling drugs; preparing medication labels; recording information for billing; maintaining accurate pharmacy records; maintaining drug and pharmaceutical stock levels; inspecting and storing stock; delivering, retrieving and exchanging medications; and providing information to staff, patients and health care professionals; and orienting and training new personnel.  The Pharmacy Technician also performs other related duties as assigned/required.  

Nature of Position(s):

Positions may be located throughout the Department of Public Health, including San Francisco General Hospital & Trauma Center (SFGHTC), Laguna Honda Hospital (LHH), San Francisco County Jails, both in San Francisco and in San Bruno, as well as various clinics and health centers located throughout the City and County of San Francisco.  Some positions may require employees to work directly with individuals within locked jails and psychiatric facilities, the homeless population and individuals who may have or may be carriers of infectious/communicable diseases.  Additionally, part-time, evenings, nights, weekends, rotating and/or holiday shifts may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

1. One (1) year of verifiable work experience within the last five (5) years assisting in the preparation of drugs and pharmaceutical items in a licensed pharmacy and possession of a valid Pharmacy Technician License/Registration issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy;  OR 


2. Possession of a valid Intern Pharmacist License/Registration issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy.


NoteDesktop Computer/Typewriter Operation Requirement - During the probationary period, successful incumbents will be required to demonstrate the ability to operate a desktop computer and use pharmacy software.  Failure to perform this function may result in dismissal or termination from employment.


Special Conditions:

Some positions may require the following:

  1. The ability to obtain and maintain security clearance with the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department
  2. The ability to lift and carry up to thirty (30) lbs.

Selection Procedures

Written Exercise: Weight 100%

Candidates will be tested by written exercises to determine relative knowledge, skill and ability levels in job-related areas, including but not limited to: knowledge of pharmacy procedures and methods, pharmacy calculation, pharmacy terminology, written order interpretation, record keeping, and inventory; oral communication and human relations ability; and desktop computer and keyboarding and computer skills. 

Candidates will be placed on the eligible list in rank order according to their final score.

The department may utilize additional selection procedures to make a final hiring decision.


Certification Rule: The certification rule for the ranked eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three Scores. The hiring department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions. 


Eligible List:
The eligible list resulting from this examination is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of twelve (12) months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
