Definition

Under general administrative direction, the Executive Director of the Child Development Program assumes responsibility for directing, supporting and monitoring the delivery of educational programs in SFUSD's Child Development Centers. Responsibilities include oversight of curriculum, staff development, evaluation, personnel and community issues, restructuring, program innovations, problem-solving and other District-wide responsibilities.

Distinguishing Features

This single position classification is distinguished by its authority and responsibility for the District's Child Development Program, involving multiple sites operating with a complex, multi-million dollar budget. 

Supervision Exercised

Supervises, directly and through subordinate Site Managers, all professional teaching and administrative support personnel.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code (class) and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Provides leadership in the supervision of Child Development Centers; supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel; interviews and selects employees and recommends transfers, reassignments, terminations and disciplinary actions.

2. Supports and monitors the delivery of educational programs at Child Development Centers; oversees curriculum, staff development, evaluation and testing assessment; working collaboratively with the Instructional Support and School Operations Office, manages all programs, including health and safety standards as applicable.

3. Supervises, evaluates, directs and assists Site Managers in the development of specific plans to meet identified school targets; assists in determining and acquiring support services.

4. Attends or chairs a variety of meetings; represents the District in collaborative partnerships and task forces with the City, County, State, human service agencies; institutions of higher education, business/industry, and judicial and law enforcement agencies.

5. Collaborates with principals and other District departments to develop and implement ongoing evaluation and improvement of instructional programs aligned to K-12 the continuum.

6. Collaborates with other District departments to resolve student issues related to program placement, transfer, discipline, complaints, appeals, investigations and litigations.

7. Develops and prepares annual budget for the assigned area; analyzes and reviews budgetary and financial data; monitors and authorizes revenues and expenditures in accordance with established guidelines.

8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: public school laws and policies as they relate to the delivery of instructional services; knowledge of Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education.

Ability to: communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; demonstrate conceptual, analytical, organizational, and management skills to resolve problems and implement change; and demonstrated leadership ability; collaborate with diverse individuals; ability to collaborate with appropriate District and school-based administrators in developing quality instructional programs that improve academic outcomes in diverse communities.

Experience and Training

Master's degree in education or related field.

Demonstrated leadership ability and evidence of strong conceptual, organizational and management skills in early childhood education.
