According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
1. Participate in a structured on-the-job training program including, but not limited to, the following:
a. Monitoring bus, trolley, surface light rail, and subway transit system operations using system devices and equipment to assess information on operations activities and external conditions affecting operations.
b. Operating automated equipment systems in real time on computer workstations using complex software systems displayed on multiple monitors/systems.
c. Using Computer Aided Dispatch / Automated Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL), traffic signal control for bus rapid transit, control street level closed circuit TV cameras.
d. Interpreting visual or graphic information from the Transportation Management Center display wall.
e. Monitoring and responding to multiple-information feeds.
f. Analyzing operational information and understanding applications of road and service maps, video image displays, graphical text data, icons, and transportation modes and symbols in written/digital formats.
g. Assessing and addressing in-service vehicle operation problems.
h. Posting messages to public information systems.
i. Coordinating transportation control with SFGo’s traffic management systems.
j. Operating the digital radio system.
k. Performing other transportation control related tasks.
2. Attend classroom-style training related to transportation control functions including, but not limited to, the following:
a. Transportation control standard operating procedures.
b. Critical thinking and decision-making.
c. Control Room coordination protocols.
d. Oral and written communication skills.
3. Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned
Knowledge of: transit lines, line management techniques, schedules and equipment necessary to coordinate and maintain safe and effective transit operations; traffic patterns and their impact on transit corridors necessary to effectively reroute and reschedule transit equipment; emergency procedures necessary to quickly and safely assist passengers, the public and transit personnel in emergency situations; and radio communication terminology necessary to expediently and effectively handle emergency situations.
Ability and skill to: read maps/schematics, and character text information, including visual, audio and emergency graphic icons; analyze operational information; make real-time decisions and choose appropriate solutions by exercising sound judgment in making recommendations within guidelines; exercise human relations/interpersonal skills to deal courteously and effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds; speak clearly and effectively in order to give instructions, answer questions, respond to daily operational incidents; write instructions, reports, memos, correspondence, documents, and records in a clear, concise, and accurate manner.
These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.
1. Four (4) years of experience equivalent to that of a Transit Supervisor with the San Francisco Municipal Railway
OR
2. Two (2) years of experience working in a central control environment responsible for the movement of Light Rail Vehicles or buses for a large local, state, or federal transportation or defense agency.
Substitution: Applicants may substitute up to ½ (one half) of the required work experience on a year-for-year basis with the completion of college coursework at an accredited college or university. 30 semester units/45 quarter units will be considered equivalent to one year of work experience.
Nature of work requires working in a fast-paced and safety critical environment; sitting for extended periods of time; constantly viewing display monitors; and working rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. In addition, employees may be required to wear headsets.
