Definition

Under supervision, performs the sale, collection, receipt, counting, and reconciliation of transit fares, using mathematical calculations and various pieces of machinery and equipment.  Performs other related duties as required.

Distinguishing Features

The 9110 Fare Collections Receiver is the entry level in the Fare Collections Receiver series.  Positions at this level are distinguished from those in 9116 Senior Fare Collections Receiver /9117 Principal Fare Collections Receiver primarily in that there are no supervisory responsibilities.  Incumbents follow written and oral instructions and standard procedures.  Work is performed in a variety of settings, depending upon assignment.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

  1. Collects fares from revenue sources, (coaches, subway stations, etc.) using a variety of equipment.

 

  1. Sells fare media and other transit materials to patrons using electronic sales systems.

 

  1. Counts, packages, distributes and delivers fare media and other transit materials to vendors and Divisions; collects and reconciles revenue from sales made by vendors.

 

  1. Counts/sorts coins and currency collected from various locations, using sorting machines; reconciles and balances cash collected from daily revenue and sale of various transit materials, using 10-key adding machines, basic computer data entry and/or currency counters.

 

  1. Collects and provides data related to fare collections and inventory to assist in the preparation of reports, audits, and analyses.

 

  1. Drives/operates various vehicles, such as vans, trucks, and forklifts for the transportation of transit materials and revenues collected.

 

  1. Inspects, cleans, uses and maintains equipment related to the collection and processing of fares.

 

  1. Receives, intakes, labels and inventories lost and found items in order to match items to owners and transfer items to Customer Service Center; disposes of unmatched items.

 

  1. Provides customer service to members of the public in an effort to effectively communicate information regarding fare media sales, lost and found items, and other miscellaneous SFMTA information.

 

  1. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: cash handling and balancing processes and procedures, and related security measures used when handling cash.

Skill to: perform basic computational and math skills used in cash processing, balancing, and reconciliation; with or without the use of a calculator.

Ability to: use and maintain equipment, machinery, computers and office machines related to the collection of and processing of fares; read/understand written instructions, forms, revenue/inventory control records etc. and to complete related forms; comprehend verbal instruction, speak clearly and interact courteously with the general public and vendors; interact courteously and effectively with internal and external customers; lift/carry containers up to 75 pounds; drive a variety of vehicles including large trucks and forklifts; basic use of a computer to produce reports, monitor inventory, input data and perform fare media sales.

Experience and Training

These minimum qualifications are to be used as a guide for establishing the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license which may be required for employment in the class.  Although these minimum qualifications are typical of the class, additional minimum qualifications and special conditions may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the job announcement.

1. Two (2) years of verifiable full-time experience (within the last 5 years) in the daily collection, processing and balancing of large amounts of cash; AND

2. Possession of a valid High School Diploma, GED or California High School Proficiency Certificate; AND

3. Possession of a valid driver license; AND

4. Ability to lift and carry containers weighing up to 75 pounds.

 

Substitution: Completion of two (2) years (60 semester units or 90 quarter units) of education from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.

- Must be bondable.

 

Nature of work requires working in a 24-hours-a-day/7-days-a-week, indoor/outdoor operation with rotating, holiday, and/or weekend shifts; may be required to work in a room with closed circuit television and wear a smock; work outdoors in inclement weather; kneel, stoop, bend and turn in the performance of duties; work with or without the assistance of armed security guards; may be exposed to high noise levels, dust and diesel fumes.  Must be able to lift and carry revenue containers weighing up to 75 pounds onto a movable cart and push cart approximately one city block.  Must drive/operate a variety of vehicles involved in the collection and transport of revenue from various locations.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
