Under general supervision of Department of Parking and Traffic staff or Community College District (CCD) Public Safety Department staff, and in cooperation with School District/CCD personnel, directs traffic at intersections where students cross in going to and from school; escorts students through intersection when necessary. Requires responsibility for following oral and written instructions in carrying out regulations concerning both pedestrian and vehicular traffic in designated areas; continuous personal contact with school children/students, teachers, parents, motorists and the general public; observing and reporting unusual happenings pertaining to the welfare or safety of students.
Class 8201 Crossing Guard is distinguished from other Security and Public Safety classes by its very limited scope of directing traffic and ensuring safety of students in walkways, intersections and parking areas.
Depending on assignment, may train and/or supervise student assistants.
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
1. Controls traffic at designated intersections either by mechanical or hand signal in order to permit students and other pedestrians to cross the street in safety.
2. Controls students at intersections and restrains them from crossing until it is determined to be safe; when appropriate, escorts students through intersections.
3. May instruct students, parents, faculty and staff as well as student crossing guard assistant(s) in the elements of safety.
4. Reports the license number of motor vehicles whose drivers disobey the crossing guard's instructions or disregard safety rules in other respects; reports to school principal or Public Safety Department the names of students disobeying the instructions given by crossing guard or student assistants.
5. Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of: Traffic laws especially those relating to pedestrian right-of-way and speed limits in various districts especially in a school-crossing area; and elements of traffic safety applying to motorists and pedestrians.
Ability to: Establish and maintain respect and compliance of students.
Any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying.
All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
