Definition

Under general supervision, receives, issues and keeps records of tools, equipment and other materials used in the municipal transit system and in the vocational training programs of the San Francisco Community College District; performs related duties as required. Requires responsibility for. Following established methods and procedures in the keeping, issuing, receiving and repairing of tools, equipment and other maintenance materials; preventing minor losses through the safeguarding of repair tools and equipment of relatively low value; keeping routine records of items received, issued and on hand, Nature of work requires some physical effort and dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs and body; intermittent exposure to working conditions where minor injuries may occur.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

1. Receives and issues all tools, equipment, flags, bombs, lanterns and other materials used in excavation and track repair work by track maintenance crews.

2. Receives and issues tools and equipment used in vocational training programs conducted by the San Francisco Community College District.

3. Maintains and repairs pneumatic jackhammers and tie tampers, including all phases of disassembly, cleaning, checking with micrometer, ordering of new parts and reassembly.

4. Makes minor repairs to track maintenance tools and equipment, including electric and gas driven grinders; replaces handles on sledges, chisels, picks and shovels; sharpens drills, chisels, punches, cutters and picks; repairs air compressor hoses and electrical extension cords.

5. Repairs all issued automotive and aircraft shop tools, including mechanical and electrical equipment.

6. Performs safety checks on all issued and installed equipment.

7. Sorts returned tools and equipment for defective parts; orders replacement of supplies and stock items, as required.

8. May occasionally construct special tools, rigging equipment, air compressor hoses and electrical extension cords.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Requires working knowledge of various hand tools and equipment used in municipal transit repair operations.

Requires ability to repair and maintain various automotive and aircraft shop tools; keep simple routine records; deal courteously, effectively and tactfully with fellow employees and students.

Experience and Training

Requires completion of eight years of elementary school, supplemented by at least one year of experience in general mechanical maintenance and repair work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
